Heartbroken Over the Devastating Fires in Jasper

At Kaleidoscope Tours, our hearts are heavy as we witness the devastating fires ravaging Jasper. As a nature tour company, nature lovers, and huge fans of Jasper, this tragedy deeply affects us. The breathtaking landscapes and the incredible wildlife that call Jasper home are at the core of what we cherish and strive to share with others.

The impact on the wildlife is particularly heartbreaking. Jasper's diverse ecosystem, home to majestic creatures like elk, bighorn sheep, grizzly bears, and the endangered woodland caribou, is suffering immensely. These fires disrupt their habitats, forcing them to flee and struggle for survival in an already challenging environment.

We are especially concerned about the woodland caribou, whose populations have been dwindling due to habitat loss and human activity. The fires further threaten their existence, leaving them with even fewer safe places to go.

🌿✨ The Hidden Jewel of the Ancient World ✨🌿

In 1873, archaeologists stumbled upon what they thought was just a hill in the Yucatan forest. Little did they know, they had uncovered a monumental icon of the Mayan civilization: the pyramid of Chichen Itza! 🏛️

When the first Europeans arrived in Mexico, they discovered various native civilizations with their temples, monuments, and necropolises. Yet, the dense Yucatan forest kept Chichen Itza hidden until its true grandeur was revealed. Initially mistaken for a "stone house" due to the overgrowth, this pyramid held secrets of a magnificent past. 🌿🏠

Monarchs are the only butterfly species known to make a two-way migration to avoid North America’s freezing wintertime temperatures, traveling annually from summer breeding grounds down to the warm, humid climates of Mexico’s Sierra Madre Mountains—a journey that can stretch as far as 3,000 miles.

To this day, researchers have yet to understand what triggers the monarch butterfly’s epic migration. Yet every year, between October and March, monarchs form colonies at the exact same overwintering sites located in a small stretch of Mexico’s temperate, high-altitude forests. Tens of thousands of butterflies will cluster on a single oyamel fir tree, cozying up to generate warmth and conserve energy as temperatures dip.

Photographer Jaime Rojo captured this sunset scene on Michoacan’s Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and annual overwintering grounds for the iconic butterflies. Dear valued guests and friends,

We hope this message finds you well. As the owner of Kaleidoscope Tours, I feel compelled to address a recent incident that has unfortunately impacted our reputation. Transparency and honesty are at the core of our business, and we believe it's essential to share our side of the story.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙄𝙣𝙘𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩: 𝘼 𝙏𝙖𝙡𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙐𝙣𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨

Recently, we had the pleasure of hosting a group of travelers who embarked on what was meant to be an unforgettable journey. Our promise to them was simple: an incredible tour, fantastic food, and a stay at a great hotel in picturesque locations. And for the most part, we delivered on that promise.

However, there were a few unexpected twists that marred an otherwise delightful experience. Let me shed light on the details:

1. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙫𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙂𝙪𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙨: Two additional passengers were added to the tour, which understandably caught our original 10 guests off guard. They had anticipated a more intimate experience and felt their privacy was compromised, despite being told prior to booking that this is peak season and we take 12 passengers.

2. 𝙇𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙞𝙣 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣: Our tour is conducted in English, but unfortunately, some members of the group insisted on speaking French throughout. This language barrier created tension and hindered the overall camaraderie.

3. 𝙍𝙪𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙎𝙣𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙍𝙚𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙨: Regrettably, these guests exhibited rude behavior, not only towards our team but also towards fellow travelers. Snide comments were made at every opportunity, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere.

4.𝙏𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘼𝙙𝙫𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙜𝙚: Despite our generosity, they ordered alcoholic beverages and desserts that were not part of the tour package. We believe in going the extra mile, but this was an abuse of our goodwill.

5. 𝙉𝙤 𝙏𝙞𝙥 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘿𝙧𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧/𝙂𝙪𝙞𝙙𝙚: Our hardworking driver/guide, who tirelessly ensured their safety and comfort, received no tip whatsoever during their three-day journey.

6. 𝙁𝙚𝙧𝙧𝙮 𝙁𝙞𝙖𝙨𝙘𝙤: Due to low lake water levels, we couldn't proceed with a planned ferry ride to Isla Janitzio. A unanimously agreed upon itinerary change was made and we toured 3 Pueblos Mágicos instead. Capula, Quiroga and Tzintzuntzan. Instead of understanding the situation, they demanded a reimbursement of $100 Canadian for an $8 boat ride. Fairness seemed to escape them.

7. 𝙆𝙚𝙮𝙗𝙤𝙖𝙧𝙙 𝙒𝙖𝙧𝙧𝙞𝙤𝙧𝙨: Once back home, they took to TripAdvisor, wielding their keyboards like swords. Every minor inconvenience was magnified, and they spared no detail in their scathing reviews.

8. 𝙎𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙋𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙚𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩: They argued that because we covered the first round of drinks and tips, it was a free-for-all. Apparently, our kindness was interpreted as an open invitation to exploit our hospitality.

9. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙐𝙣𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙮 𝙁𝙚𝙬: It saddens us that these guests, who experienced so much beauty during their trip, chose to focus on negativity. Their mission seems to be to tarnish our reputation for their own satisfaction.

Instead, we will visit 3 unique and fascinating Pueblos Mágicos; Capula which is famous for its Catrinas and pottery. Followed by lunch in Quiroga, the birth place and best place in the world to experience Tacos Carnitas! Then explore the cemeteries of Tzintzuntzan that inspired Disney & Pixars "Coco" and walk through the church Square past 500 year old olive trees planted by Vasco de Quiroga himself. This tour will be our last for the season, and possibly one of the best, as the monarch butterflies begin their northern migration back to Canada and the United States

Did you know that the jaguar was the king of the Maya world? This majestic animal was worshipped by the ancient Maya as a symbol of power, wisdom, and connection to the cosmos. They believed that the jaguar could cross between the realms of day and night, life and death, and even human and divine. Some of the most famous Maya rulers and heroes claimed to be descendants of the jaguar, and wore its skin and claws as signs of their authority.

One of the most impressive places to see the jaguar's influence is Ek Balam, a Maya city that means "black or star jaguar" in their language. Here you can admire the stunning carvings and sculptures that depict the jaguar and its role in Maya mythology and history. You can also climb the towering pyramid that houses the tomb of Ukit Kan Lek Tok, a powerful king who was buried with a jaguar pelt and a jade mask.

We just had the most amazing carnitas at El Rey de las Carnitas in Quiroga, Michoacán. This place is a legend, and for a good reason. The pork is cooked in its own lard until it's tender and crispy, and you can choose from different cuts like rib, skin, mouth, or chicharron. The flavor is incredible, and the portions are generous and the service, 5 star! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
We paired my carnitas with fresh tortillas, salsa, cilantro, onion, and lime. It was a feast for the senses!🌶🌮🍋‍🟩

Did you know that carnitas originated in Quiroga? According to folklore, Hernan Cortes introduced pigs and frying to Mexico, and hosted a banquet in Coyoacan where he served pork cooked in lard with cornbread. This was the first carnitas dish ever, and it became a staple of Michoacán cuisine. Carnitas are now enjoyed all over Mexico and beyond, but Quiroga is still the best place to try them. If you ever visit this charming town, don't miss El Rey de las Carnitas. It's a must!

#DanzaDeLosViejitos 🇲🇽 I was amazed by this young street performer who danced the Danza de los Viejitos (Dance of the Little Old Men) outside the statue of José María Morelos on the island of Janitzio. This is a traditional folk dance from Michoacán that has its roots in the pre-Hispanic era, when the Purépecha people honored the Old God or Sun God with their movements and sounds. The dance is also a satire of the Spanish colonizers, who are represented by the masks, hats, and canes of the dancers. The dance is a way of celebrating the strength and wisdom of the elders, who are the keepers of the traditions and culture. The dance is full of humor, joy, and energy. It's amazing to see how the dancers can move so fast and agile, despite their costumes and props. The music is a mix of indigenous and European influences, with the violin, clarinet, and guitar. The statue of Morelos is another impressive sight on the island. Morelos was a priest, military leader, and politician who fought for the independence of Mexico from Spain in the early 19th century. He was one of the most important figures of the Mexican War of Independence and is considered a national hero. The statue is 47.6 meters tall and has a museum inside with paintings that depict the life and achievements of Morelos. The statue was built by Juan Tirado Valle and Ramón Alva de la Canal between 1933 and 1938, during the presidency of Lázaro Cárdenas, who was born in Michoacán.
