10. Petaling Street

Petaling Street is a very popular landmark market place in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. It is known as the local Chinatown and is bustling with various activities that take place throughout the day and night. Since it is mainly a market place, it is constantly bustling with people- locals and tourists alike- as well as shopkeepers and merchants.

Apart from its cultural significance in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Street is also known for the numerous sumptuous food stalls that serve authentic Malaysian dishes like the curry noodles, Asam laksa, barbecued fish (Ikan Bakar) and Hokkien mee. Perhaps the most striking feature of the street found here is the fresh seafood.

Since this area is less prone to floods, the wealthier sector of the population has been able to settle here with businesses, shops and merchandise. In 2003, the market place underwent a major renovation, with improved pavements and streets and well-constructed shops with bright colourful umbrellas attached to them, giving the shops the signature look they bear now.

The entire stretch of the market area is covered with a green awning covering the roof to protect the shop owners and visitors from rain and heat. Petaling Street lights up at night with bright neon lights and the whole place thrives with life, energy, happy shoppers and food lovers throughout the da

5. Three Years Old

Three Years Old is a highly Instagram-able cafe located a row of terrace houses which have been around since 1920s.

It dons a creme-beige colored wall, where patrons love to go to for pictures while waiting for their meal to be served or after they are done enjoying the food here.

No matter which day of the week it is, this place is highly crowded. People wait in lines for up to 20mins and due to the lack of manpower, the second floor isn’t usually opened for dining.

The indoor section is pretty narrow and tight that passerbys would be able to hear your conversation if you are talking ever too loudly.

Parking here is also hard to get because it is located around a housing area.

4. Mee Tarik

This place serves Mainland Chinese cuisine like skewers, aluminum wrapped grilled vegetables, beef noodle soup and so on. We can tell you right off the bat that this place is going to be out go-to spot after late night movies or partying for some noodles and skewers. Their mee tarik is made on the spot and cooked only when orders come in.

This makes their noodles super duper fresh and bouncy. The texture of the noodles is just right, with the right amount of chewiness not to make it feel soggy.Usually with pulled noodles like this, the flour from the noodles will seep into the soup and make it cloudy and taste flour-y.

But the soup at this place was very clear and refreshing. The beef flavor came through and warmed our throats.
It was also salted and garnished with coriander leaves.

3. Halab

Bukit Bintang is known for a lot of things, especially food. In the heart of KL, there are plenty of interesting and novel foods such as wagyu beef skewers, 32cm parfaits, shawarmas, kunafas and many more. They also have an Arab street called Jalan Berangan over there where you can find a lot of Arabic food and shops. You can find a few good shawarma places here.

As for the taste, the first bite was kinda dry and bland. But as I got to the middle, the sauces became more intense and there was a lot of meat. The meat was juicy and flavourful. I love the chicken parts as they were crispy and tender at the same time. The herb was not so overpowering and the sauces just tasted a bit sour like yoghurt.

They also gave a white condiment called Tahini in a little container. It tasted a bit bland by itself because it’s basically just ground sesame seed sauce. However, it goes really well with the shawarma. It just adds this lip-smacking creaminess that I really like.

2. Childhood Malaysia

Snackeez Enterprise was originally conceived as a trading company for snacks and confectionaries in 2015. In 2016, a new business concept was formed when interest in childhood themed items was observed and the company repositioned itself to fulfil the niche demand. The first Childhood concept store came in the form of a humble push-cart in IOI City Mall, Putrajaya. Its financial success led to the subsequent opening of a kiosk in Mytown Shopping Centre, Cheras in 2017 which proved to be an even bigger success. Since then, the business has continued to flourish and was featured in articles and interviews by respectable local publications such as Berita Harian, Kosmos, Harian Metro, Sin Chew Daily and BFM to name but a few.

1. Soong Kee Beef Noodles

This was a nice surprise for me when exploring Malaysian food. The noodles were addicting - that right balance of salty, sweet savory on the thin, al dente noodles topped with crisp veg made me want to have it over and over again. It was heavy, though, so even if you are a foodie, might be challenging to consume an entire bowl on your own. It's stuff you would crave, though.

I had the beef tripe soup to go with it, and it was quite flavorful as well, though the meat had a slightly more gamey flavor than I am used to. Would gladly return for those noodles, though.

Food is priced well, too. Go for the meal sets to get maximum bang for the buck.
