The dusky leaf monkey (Trachypithecus obscurus), also known as the spectacled langur or the spectacled leaf monkey, is a species of primate in the family Cercopithecidae. It is found in Peninsular Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand, and can occasionally be found in Singapore. During the day, these small, folivorous primates divide in sub-groups and forage for vegetation and fruit throughout the tropical forests. According to the IUCN, the dusky leaf monkey's population is declining due to habitat loss, poaching, and anthropogenic land use, which prompted the IUCN to classify the species as endangered in 2015.

For many people, it seems as if we are born with a natural fear of snakes. We may be terrified of their scaly, slithering bodies, their cold, vertical pupils, their venomous fangs, or the potential suffocation from their coils. 🐍🐍🐍

Avoid Damp and Shady Areas to Reduce Encounters
However, according to Ali, the "Snake King" of Penang Hill, and eco-tour guide Ong KP, most snakes won’t attack humans unless provoked. 🐍🐍🐍

Ong, who often encounters various snakes in his role as a natural guide in the tropical rainforest, advises remembering three key points when venturing into the wild: watch your step for hidden snakes, avoid damp and shady areas, and stay away from exploring holes in the forest. These measures significantly reduce the likelihood of encountering snakes. 🐍🐍🐍

This is because snakes often blend into their surroundings, making them hard to spot. If you accidentally step on a snake, it may retaliate by biting. Additionally, most snakes prefer shady spots and rest near holes during the day, so it’s best to avoid these areas to prevent disturbing them.

Stay Calm and Avoid Provocation
If you encounter a snake in the wild, the first thing to do is remain calm. Avoid making sudden movements or provoking the snake. By not making it feel threatened, you are more likely to leave the situation safely. 🐍🐍🐍

"In Malaysia’s wilderness, the most commonly encountered snake is the cobra. If you see one, estimate its length and keep a distance of at least three times the height of its raised body. Remember, don’t try to confront it. If you see any snake, the best thing to do is slowly back away and leave the area," Wong explains.

He emphasizes that the wild is the habitat of wildlife, and humans are intruders in their home. Respecting nature is essential, and it’s important not to disturb the animals living there. 🐍🐍🐍

"Most snakes only attack when they feel their lives are threatened. While humans fear snakes, snakes fear humans too. Only during their breeding season are snakes more likely to be aggressive."

Ong KP Special Bond with a Rescued Snake 🐍🐍🐍
Speaking of his experiences with snakes, Ong shares a memorable story about rescuing a young snake on Penang Hill. Even after releasing it back into the wild, he still occasionally encounters it in the forest.

"The snake was too young to survive on its own when I rescued it, so I took care of it for a year. Even after releasing it, it still seems to recognize me, appearing as if to meet me intentionally and not leaving in a hurry."

Jokingly, Ong adds, "An eco-tour guide who hasn’t been bitten by a snake isn’t a real guide. I’ve been attacked by snakes before, and that’s the price of handling snakes in the wild."

Ali: A Lifelong Bond with Snakes
Ali, the "Snake King," shares how his bond with snakes began in childhood. As an adult, he even worked in South Korea as a reptile caretaker and has extensive experience raising various species of snakes. 🐍🐍🐍

"After returning to Malaysia, I started working at Penang Hill, allowing visitors to take photos with the snakes I keep as pets. This not only earned me a living but also helped promote a better understanding of snakes among the public."

Recalling his most unforgettable experience, Ali mentions being bitten by a cobra in the wild. He was poisoned and fell unconscious for three days, making it the most dangerous experience of his life.

He advises people venturing into the forest to be well-prepared, especially by wearing long pants and sturdy hiking shoes. This ensures better protection in case of unexpected incidents.

"Protective shoes and long pants provide a barrier if you accidentally provoke a snake and it attacks." 🐍🐍🐍

Think Twice Before Keeping Snakes as Pets
Regarding keeping venomous snakes as pets, Ong advises the public to think carefully before making such a decision.

"Many people get excited about keeping snakes without doing enough research. They impulsively buy a snake they like, only to find it too difficult or expensive to care for, leading to abandonment." 🐍🐍🐍

"Ordinary people often can’t fully understand a snake’s behavior. Raising snakes requires financial resources—just like owning a luxury car, you need the means to maintain it." 🐍🐍🐍

Ong concludes that only professionals who need to work closely with snakes should consider keeping them. 🐍🐍🐍
