The Maliau Basin Wildlife & Resources Survey Seminar has officially wrapped up at Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa! Officiated by YB Datuk Abidin Madingkir, Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, and graced by distinguished guests, the seminar was a remarkable gathering of insights and expertise.

The event kicked off with 9 captivating presentations from various camps, sharing valuable findings under the expert chairmanship of Dr. John Tay, a Forestry specialist. A lively Q&A session followed, where attendees actively engaged, sparking further discussions.

The seminar continued with an insightful forum featuring four esteemed panelists: Prof. Dr. Abd. Hamid Ahmad and Dr. Elia Godong from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Dr. Cheryl Cheah from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and Mr. Primus Lambut from the Sabah Wildlife Department (SWD) who provided enriching perspectives on conservation topics.

The seminar concluded with closing remarks from Dr. Waidi Sinun, Group Manager of the Conservation and Environmental Management Division (CEMD), followed by the presentation of souvenir to researchers, camp leaders, coordinators, and panelists as a token of appreciation for their contributions. Special thanks to all supporting agencies, institutions, staff, and media for their dedication.

The data and insights from this survey are crucial as we review the Maliau Basin Strategic Management Plan, guiding MBCA towards its conservation goals and objectives. Thank you to everyone who made this seminar a success! ๐ŸŒฑโœจ

A seminar on the Maliau Basin Wildlife and Resources Survey will be held as a continuation to the survey conducted from May 13th to May 26th, 2024.

The objectives of this Seminar are as follows:

i. To provide a platform for participants of the Survey to present and share their findings.

ii. Collecting data and obtaining information for the review of the Maliau Basin Strategic Management Plan 2024 - 2033.

iii. To assess the suitability of Maliau Basin's natural environment as an ecotourism destination.

iv. To evaluate the potential for suitable research activities in Maliau Basin.

The Seminar, taking place on November 14, 2024 (Thursday) at Shangri-Laโ€™s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa, will feature nine (9) presenters sharing key findings from their survey sessions. This event will bring together participants from the Maliau Basin Wildlife & Resources Survey 2024, along with department and agency heads, supporting staff, and media members, highlighting the latest insights into Maliau Basin's conservation efforts and research. In 1981, Yayasan Sabah voluntarily designated Maliau Basin as a conservation area, which was officially recognized in 1984. By 1997, it became a Class I (Protection) Forest Reserve, growing to 58,840 ha to protect its unique landscapes, including Lake Linumunsut. Over the years, more areas were reclassified to safeguard this vital ecosystem. Managed by Yayasan Sabah, the Maliau Basin Conservation Area is guided by the Maliau Basin Management Committee, working alongside various state and national agencies to protect and preserve this natural wonder for research, education, and conservation.
