Whether you are a cave explorer or a curious traveler, Gomantong Caves is one of the many highlights of Sandakan which you must visit at least once in your lifetime. However, if you are at all squeamish about creepy-crawlies of any sort, you might want to think twice about going there.

Located within Gomantong Hill, the hill is the largest limestone outcrop in the Lower Kinabatangan area. The cave system is made up of two primary chambers, the more accessible Simud Hitam (Black Cave), and the larger Simud Putih (White Cave). The names refer to the main type of nests produced by swiftlets in each cave.

Simud Hitam's ceiling can reach 40–60 m (130–200 ft) high. It is the source of the less-valuable "black saliva" nests. These contain both feathers and saliva and require cleaning afterward. Whereas Simud Putih is not open to the general public, and access requires appropriate caving equipment and experience. It is where the more valuable "white saliva" nests of the swiftlets are found, and is reached by a steep, 30-minute climb further up the mountains. The main entrance is located above and adjacent to the main "lighthole" at the back of Simud Hitam.

Top 5 mountains in Sabah

Sabah boasts Malaysia's five highest peaks, with Mount Kinabalu leading at 4,095 meters. It is the most prominent feature of Kinabalu Park, Malaysia's first World Heritage Site. The climb to Mount Kinabalu's peak typically takes at least two days and one night.

Mount Trus Madi, which stands at 2,642 meters, is nestled in the Trus Madi Forest Reserve. It is home to various birds, orchids, and pitcher plants. Its mossy trails and striking flora create a fantasy-like atmosphere for hikers.

Mount Sinsing, discovered recently in 2018 and now recognized as the third tallest at 2,586 meters, offers a more challenging hiking experience. Nearby, Mount Kaingaran, the fifth tallest at 2,468 meters, can be paired with Mount Sinsing for a combined 4D3N hiking expedition.

Mount Tambuyukon, at 2,579 meters, is located within the Crocker Range Park. Known for its challenging terrain and lengthy trails, it usually takes about five days and four nights to conquer, making it one of the hardest to peak.

These majestic mountains attract adventurers and nature enthusiasts to visit Sabah, and they often get more than they anticipate.

Fun Fact: Did you know Rhinoceros hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros 110cm) is one of the largest birds in rainforests of Asia and is found in primary forest throughout Borneo?

The Rhinoceros Hornbill has a prominent golden-yellow horn, called a casque, on the top of its beak which is made up of keratin (the same material as human fingernails) that acts as a sound chamber to magnify its bird’s calls.

Feasting on Sinalau Bakas at one of the Sinalau Bakas Stalls over at Tamparuli 🐗❤

A must-try for foodies and adventure seekers! 1kg of wild boar meat paired with wild boar soup, all for just RM70.50. To top it off, grab a small container of sambal mixed with ikan bilis and bunga kantan from one of the stalls for only RM13. It was absolutely amazing and paired perfectly with the dish! The flavors were incredible, and the stunning landscape view made it even better!
