Thaipusam is a Hindu festival that is celebrated predominantly by the Tamil community. The festival is dedicated to Lord Murugan, also known as Subramanya, Kartikeya, or Skanda, who is considered the God of War and the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
The origin of Thaipusam is rooted in Hindu mythology. According to the legend, the festival commemorates the occasion when Parvati gave Murugan a vel (spear) to vanquish the demon Soorapadman. Thaipusam is celebrated to honor Murugan's victory of good over evil.
