Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark Langkawi Geopark offers an experience of exploring the meaning of integrating nature and human development.

The integration reveal on conservation of nature (geodiversity and biodiversity) and cultural heritage, education to public and local economic empowerment through sustainable nature tourism. The conservation of rich nature comprises of geodiversity and biodiversity are in the form of Geoforest Park representing unique record of 550 to 240 million years of geology and landscape known as Machinchang

Cambrian Geoforest Park, Kilim Karst Geoforest Park and Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest Park. Beside these geoforest park also protect biodiversity in diverse habitats including mangroves, tidal flats, beaches, estuaries, coral reefs, caves, limestone and many more, harbour various life forms. Located along the Straits of Malacca, famous historical trade route in South East Asia, this island accumulated legend, myth and historical connected with the region. This heritage combined with the existing traditional fishing and farming village adds charm to local culture.

WEAVING HOPE PROJECT

In the context of the 11th International Conference of UNESCO Global Geoparks 2025, the Global Geoparks Network invites Geopark members to actively participate in the “Weaving Hope” initiative, a project developed by Kutralkura UNESCO Global Geopark and the Catholic University of Temuco.

This project aims to showcase the diversity of cultural heritage through the creation of textile pieces representing each territory, which will be proudly displayed at the conference venue in Kutralkura UNESCO Global Geopark, Chile. This remarkable artwork, interweaving colourful threads, symbolizes our network’s connection, the uniqueness of our cultural heritage, and our commitment to inclusive, holistic, and sustainable human development.

Each Geopark is invited to send at least one or two traditional textile pieces, measuring 50 x 75 cm. If the Geopark encompasses different local communities or ethnic groups, sending one or two pieces from each community or group for the “Weaving Hope” project is recommended.

All textiles must be sent to the conference organization before June 15th, 2025.

A total of 33 students and 7 teachers from SK Kelar, Kelantan, participated in an educational visit to the Geopark Discovery Centre and Kilim Mangrove Sanctuary. The visit was guided by Ranger Aliah, who shared various fascinating insights about the uniqueness of Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark.

The students began their experience at the Geopark Discovery Centre, where they explored the geological history, biodiversity, and conservation efforts of Langkawi. They then ventured into the Kilim Mangrove Sanctuary, witnessing the beauty of the mangrove forests and learning about their vital role as an important ecosystem habitat.

This program aimed to expose the younger generation to the importance of natural conservation and strengthen their awareness of the unique treasures of Langkawi Geopark.

SCHOOL TO GEOPARK

Tadika Kemas Cawangan Pekan Kuah ke Pusat Informasi Pendidikan Geopark Discovery Centre (GDC).

15 Januari 2025 | Langkawi Geopark Discovery Centre, Kilim telah menerima lawatan sambil belajar dari Tadika Kemas Pekan Kuah.

Lawatan si cilik ini telah di hadiri seramai 21 murid dari 4 hingga 6 tahun dan 4 orang guru pengiring.

Maklumat dan informasi menarik berkenaan Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark di dalam Geopark Discovery Center telah disampaikan oleh Ranger Nadira dan Ranger Shafiq yg bertugas.

Murid-murid dan para guru juga berpeluang merasai pengalaman meneroka santuari bakau untuk mengenal ekosistem paya bakau serta kepentingan kawasan bakau kepada komuniti setempat dan juga Langkawi.

14 January 2025 | Clean-up at Kebuk Arang & Gua Bukit Pinang

Langkawi Geopark ranger team; Zamzuri, Haikal and Idlan, Faizal, Zam and Ashraf, together with the Kubang Badak community, joined forces to conduct a cleaning activity at Kebuk Arang and Gua Bukit Pinang. This initiative aims to ensure that these geopark sites remain preserved, clean, and sustainable for the enjoyment of current and future generations.

14 Januari 2025 | Seramai 120 orang pelajar bersama 20 guru pengiring telah menghadiri lawatan ke Langkawi Geopark Discovery Centre (LGDC) untuk mendapatkan taklimat dan penerangan berkaitan Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark (LUGGp).

Kumpulan pertama dipandu oleh Cik Rasanubari, Ketua Penolong Pengurus Seksyen Geopark dan Kelestarian dan kumpulan kedua dipandu oleh Puan Norasilah, Penolong Pegawai Tadbir.Peserta dan guru telah melawat Galeri Geopark untuk mempelajari informasi berkaitan sejarah, geologi, dan kepelbagaian biologi LUGGp. Pelajari juga dibawa ke Santuari Bakau dengan bimbingan Puan Nur Basirah, Renjer Geopark, yang memberikan penjelasan tentang kepentingan ekosistem bakau kepada komuniti setempat serta peranannya dalam mengekalkan keseimbangan alam sekitar.

Para pelajar dan guru amat teruja dengan keunikan pokok bakau, ciri-ciri istimewanya, serta kepelbagaian flora dan fauna yang terdapat di kawasan ini. Lawatan ini bukan sahaja memberi pengalaman mendalam, malah turut menambah kefahaman mereka tentang usaha pemeliharaan alam semula jadi di bawah rangka LUGGp.

Semoga pengalaman dan maklumat yang diperoleh ini menjadi nilai tambah yang bermanfaat dalam melengkapkan program Kedah International STEM and English in Camp.

Lawatan dari Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kelibang ke Langkawi Geopark Discovery Centre (LGDC), Kilim.

Seramai 40 orang pelajar bersama 3 orang guru pengiring telah hadir ke ke LGDC untuk mendapatkan taklimat dan penerangan berkaitan Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark. Pelajar dan guru dibawa masuk ke galeri Geopark bagi memperolehi informasi berkaitan LUGGp dan meneroka Santuari Bakau bagi memahami kepentingan kawasan bakau kepada komuniti setempat.
Pelajar dan guru amat teruja dengan keunikan pokok bakau yang mempunyai keistimewaan tersendiri serta kepelbagaian tumbuhan lain dan haiwan yang terdapat di kawasan bakau tersebut.
Semoga pengalaman dan informasi yang diperolehi dapat dikongsi kepada kawan-kawan yang tidak mempunyai kesempatan untuk merasai pengalaman tersebut.

Pelajar dan guru dibawa masuk ke galeri Geopark bagi memperolehi informasi berkaitan LUGGp dan meneroka Santuari Bakau bagi memahami kepentingan kawasan bakau kepada komuniti setempat.

8 January 2025 | Dato’ Haslina binti Abdul Hamid, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA), Wan Kamarul Faisal bin Wan Kamardin, Deputy CEO of LADA, Dr. Azmil Munif Bukhari, Tourism Manager, along with representatives from the Langkawi District Office, Langkawi District Engineer, Langkawi State Assemblyman (ADUN), and several other agency representatives conducted a working visit to the Langkawi National Observatory.

This visit aimed to assess the potential of the observatory in enhancing Langkawi’s position as a destination for educational and scientific tourism.

Visitors was briefed by the management of Langkawi Observatory about its current facilities, astronomical observation activities, and educational programs related to space science that can be offered to students, the community, and tourists.

During the visit, the visitor also had the opportunity to view the high-tech telescopes used for observing stars and planets. The visit provided a platform for discussions on strategic collaborations between LADA and the Langkawi Observatory to promote astronomy-based tourism in Langkawi.

Langkawi National Observatory not only serves as a center for astronomical research but also as a platform to increase public awareness of space science. It is hoped that with the support and collaboration of various stakeholders, the observatory will continue to grow and attract more visitors to explore the beauty of Langkawi’s night sky.

Lawatan Kerja YB Exco Kerja Raya ke Kilim Karst Geoforest Park

Geopark Discovery Centre telah menerima kunjungan lawatan kerja daripada YB. Tuan Haji Mohamad Yusoff bin Zakaria, Ahli Majlis Mesyuarat Kerajaan Negeri Kedah (Pengerusi Jawatankuasa Kerja Raya, Sumber Asli, Bekalan Air, Sumber Air dan Alam Sekitar).

Delegasi lawatan turut melawat 3 tapak projek pelantar yang telah siap dibina di Kilim Karst Geoforest Park iaitu Gua Cherita, Gua Langsir dan Teluk Mempelam.

We spent half a day visiting the Langkawi Geopark Discovery Centre and Kilim Karst Geoforest Park.

This exchange between two incredible geoparks is a testament to the power of global collaboration and shared passion for preserving our planet’s natural treasures.

Geopark To School at Sekolah Kebangsaan Kuala Teriang

18 December 2024| The Geopark To School program this time involved 170 students from SK Kuala Teriang, ranging from Year 1 to Year 6. The event began with an informative sharing session about Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark by Ms. Nordiana Nordin, Head of the Geopark and Sustainability Section at the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA).

A variety of engaging activities were held, including crossword puzzles, coloring, the "rainbow rain" experiment, and creating models of Langkawi's rock formations. The main objectives of the program were to expose the younger generation to the uniqueness of Langkawi Geopark and to spark curiosity about the wonders of Langkawi Island.

The program concluded with the presentation of prizes to participants, met with various expressions of excitement. Special thanks go to the school representatives, Assistant Principal (Administration), and the teachers of SK Kuala Teriang for their full support in making this program a success.

Majlis Anugerah Bintang Cemerlang Peringkat Sekolah Kebangsaan Kilim

19 December 2024| Tahniah diucapkan kepada murid-murid SK Kilim di atas kejayaan yang telah diperoleh dalam pencapaian akademik, kokurikulum dan sahsiah sepanjang sesi persekolahan pada kali ini.

Pihak Lembaga Pembangunan Langkawi turut meraikan kejayaan sekolah dan sekali lagi tahniah Guru Besar Sekolah Kebangsaan Kilim, Puan Adira binti Samsudin di atas pencapaian ini. Semoga murid-murid dapat meneruskan momentum seperti ini pada masa akan datang.
