1 day Tangier walking tour
Recently one big travel agency told me to open another tour operation in a specific country. I was surprised by her remark as even though we had known each other for 4 years, she did not buy any Morocco tour from me. She insisted that if I truly go and set it up in this country she indicated she will only sell my tours. This little conversation piqued my curious mind … “is there a good story behind it ?” I decided to dig into her company Morocco tour that she is currently promoting. Imagine to my horror, each day the itinerary looks like visiting many cities but when you read further in actual fact a “super touch & go of one monument” …. Until …. It's as good as having a great bus ride each day instead of a holiday.
Well, the question is ? Why do customers still choose to book this type of tour for their holiday? Lower price ? Big travel agency brand ? Hard sell ? Trust the sales promoter ?
Anyway, today we will discuss a short walking itinerary in the city of Tangier and I hope it will give some benefit to the visitors.
How many days are good for a short visit to Tangier ?
A good full day is preferred as it can let you absorb some of the interesting vibes of Tangier. Tangier has a long history of conflict, ever since it was settled in by the ancient Greeks and Phoenicians.
5th century - occupied by the Vandals.
6th century the Byzantines
7 & 8 century - The Arabs and Berbers
10th century - The Fatimids of Tunis Almoravides
11th century - The Almohades
12th century - The Merinids
15th century - The Portuguese
16th century- The Spanish
17th century - The British
19th century - The French
All of these influences have left their mark. They've created a town with a character quite unlike most other Moroccan cities. What better way than exploring the old kasbah as the fort and looking out to the Mediterranean sea just as the Phoenicians had done before.
What to do and see in Tangier by walking :-
1.Ibn Battuta - old house
2.Ibn Battuta Mus
Mesmerising Morocco by one of my guests. From narrow street of the medina, meeting the local Berber’s, delicious cuisine, exploring a real kasbah to the Sahara desert, an epic journey off the beaten track. What do you think ? Scenic and gorgeous ?
MUST DO PROGRAM … if you are traveling from Asia. Don’t waste your expensive flight tickets and long travel time … overnight in Sahara Desert Luxury Camp and enjoy gorgeous sunrise right infront of your tent.
How many days is enough for a visit to Casablanca ?
Casablanca is currently a financial and economical city in Morocco. As a traveler many stop here to visit the famous Hassan 2 Mosque, walk around the coastal line from the mosque to Anfa enjoying the cool breeze from the Atlantic ocean. Anfa is a new district with many high office towers and cafes. For those on a package tour, usually the mosque visit is in the morning and the bus will then leave Casablanca for the next city.
For a truly Casablanca experience, a minimum of 3 days and 2 nights will be a good idea. Here are some of the places that I truly like and have visited many times. As you may have observed here, even 2 days is not enough but you may check what is suitable for your interest.
1. Hassan 2 Mosque
2. Places Des Unies or United Nation Square
3. Boulevard Mohammed V
4. Take a Art Deco building tour
5. Attend a calligraphy workshop at musée de la Fondation Abderrahman Slaoui
6. Museum of Moroccan Judaism
7. Villa of Art
8. Zaouia Sidi Belyout
9. Zaouia Sidi Abderrahmane
10. Notre-Dame de Lourdes Church
11. Aerial Mall
12. Experience a tram ride
13. Fresh market of Marche and have nice seafood
Do enjoy your stay in Casablanca.
2. Places Des Unies
3.
Do you share his view ?
“It is the most beautiful place on earth.” by 2 time Prime Minister of Britain, Winston Churchill.
If you have been to Marrakech, do you see the straw covered walkway during your walk? Meet some water selling men in big brim straw hats with leather water storing pouches? Are you mesmerized by the chaotic Jemaa El Fna ? Marvel at the majestic wall of the medina ? Enjoying the view of the mega structure of Koutoubia mosque ? A secret smile immersed from your face .... dreamlike sensation of these mysterious faraway places while strolling while watching many hooded djellaba, dancing men, walking, chatting, drumming and merry making in the square. Are you enchanted ?

Mederssa Ben Youssef (1448-1458)
Mederssa in Morocco, mainly located inside the busy or chaotic souk. The 3 most important or famous medersa will be Bou Inania in Fes, Ben Youssef in Marrakech and Abu-al Hassan in Sale. Once they used to be the center of Islamic education but today it is open for tourists to visit.
These mederssa have the most intricate building design in Morocco. While sitting in the courtyard just as the students of this mederssa hundred years ago, you can marvel at the stunning architecture while relaxing by cooling or the heat retaining method of building such buildings.
They were founded in the 1300s during the time of the Marinid, a Sunni Muslim dynasty which ruled Morocco and other parts of northern Africa between the 13th and 15th century. Their style borrowed heavily from the Moorish architecture and design. Every inch of the building will be decorated; be it pillar, wall, door, floor, window, arch and ceiling is a work of art. Walls are splashed with the motifs and decorative tiles mainly with phases from the Quran.
This is Mederssa Ben Youssef located in the medina of Marrakech. It has been carefully restored to its former glory and it is worth giving it a visit. Entrance tickets are 50 Dirham per person.
Taliouine, the city of fragrant of the Sahara. Amazing video by TRACK!
Zaouia Sidi Abderrahmane located in the natural made coral island in the area of the same name. You may observed the green roof in the middle. For visit, one will have to walk the wide bridge until the end and you may step onto this little island. At the entrance there is a very tiny little shop that is selling candle for offering. A packet will cost 12 Dirham. Follow the path and there will be a slight left turn. The Zaouia is small like a little room. Candle offering can be put in the middle of the basket and there is a care taker there to guide you.
What is a zaouia ? A zawiya or zaouia is a building and institution associated with Sufis in the Islamic world. It can serve a variety of functions such a place of worship, school, monastery and/or mausoleum.
When I was here, the fog from the Atlantic Ocean covered the island and also the entire beach. Hardly can see the surrounding.
Magically, upon me stepping into the island, the fog clear up and a rainbow appeared.
There are many visitors who come here to enjoy the calm breeze and splashing sound of the ocean against the coral island. There are also some cafes for you to sit down and relax with a cup of Moroccan mint tea.
No photography is allowed in the Zaouia. This video taken after I walk out of the island into the Main Street.
