Soursop, also known as graviera, is a tropical fruit that is becoming increasingly popular in Kenya due to its many health benefits. Soursop farming in Kenya can be profitable if done correctly, as the fruit is in high demand both locally and internationally.
Here are some tips for soursop farming in Kenya:
Climate and Soil: Soursop thrives in warm and humid environments. It requires well-drained soils with a pH range of 5.5 to 6.5. Sandy loam or loam soils are ideal for soursop farming in Kenya.
Land preparation: Prepare the land by clearing all the weeds, rocks, and debris. Plow and harrow the land to a fine tilth before planting. The field should be levelled for proper water drainage.
Planting: Soursop can be propagated by seeds or vegetative means such as stem cuttings. Seeds are preferred for large-scale soursop farming, while vegetative means are preferred for backyard gardens. Plant the seeds or cuttings at a spacing of 5m by 5m.
Fertilizer application: Soursop is a heavy feeder and requires regular fertilizer application. Apply organic and inorganic fertilizers as per soil test recommendations. Fertilizer application should be done during the rainy season.
Irrigation: Soursop requires adequate water supply for optimal growth and fruit development. Drip irrigation or furrow irrigation systems are ideal for soursop farming in Kenya.
Pest and Disease control: Soursop is susceptible to pests such as fruit flies, mealybugs, and scale insects. It is also prone to diseases such as anthracnose and Phytophthora root rot. Regular application of approved pesticides and fungicides is recommended.
Harvesting: Soursop is ready for harvesting when the fruits start to turn yellow-green. Harvesting should be done carefully to avoid damage to the fruit. Handle the fruit gently to avoid bruises and cuts.
In conclusion, soursop farming in Kenya can be a profitable venture if done correctly. Proper land preparation, planting, fertilization, irrigation, and pest and disease control are essential for successful soursop farming.

Benefits of sweet potato Leaves (KALEMBULA) (Eat Raw Vegetables)

Sweetpotato leaves are cooked as a vegetable in many parts of the world. They are rich in vitamin B, ßcarotene, iron, calcium, zinc and protein, and the crop is more tolerant of diseases, pests and high moisture than many other leafy vegetables grown in the tropics.

A WAY TO GROW NATURALLY WITHOUT PESTICIDES

The way to stay away from harmful synthetic chemicals and pesticides, and grow Naturally, is to select plants for your garden that will help control and repel your insect pests. This method is called Companion Planting, and will help cut down on your workload in the Garden, It works best when you plant your Companion Herb varieties at same time you plant your Veggies, but you can also plant afterwards. When you are planning your Spring Garden, you can work a few of these in to help with pests.

It is always important that you experiment to find out what works best for your situation. Here are some of the best Companion Plants:

ARTEMISIA - This plant produces a strong antiseptic aroma that repels most insects. Planted as a border, it can also deter small animals like Rabbits and moles.

BASIL -The oils in Basil are said to repel thrips, flies and mosquitoes. Planted alongside Tomatoes, will help you to grow larger, tastier tomatoes.

BEE BALM- I love this plant because it attracts bees to my garden. It is another plant that you can grow with your Tomatoes.

BORAGE - Borage repels Tomato horn worms and cabbage worms, and also attracts beneficial bees and wasps. Borage also adds trace elements to the soil. Borage flowers are edible

CATNIP - This plant repels just about everything, including flea beetles, aphids, Japanese beetles, squash bugs, ants, and weevils.

CHIVES - Chives are great plants to repel Japanese beetles and carrot rust flies. It has also been said that Chives will help prevent scab when planted among apple trees.

CHRYSANTHEMUMS - When I do use an insecticide I use one made from chrysanthemums called Pyrethrum. This all-natural pesticide can help control things like roaches, ticks, silverfish, lice, fleas, bedbugs, and to control ants in certain parts of the garden. In the garden white flowering chrysanthemums are said to drive away Japanese beetles, and Painted Daisy kills root nematodes.

DAHLIAS - Dahlias repel nematodes and the blooms are great for adding some color to flower borders and fresh arrangements

DILL - Dill is best planted with Cucumbers and Onion varieties. During the cool season It can also be planted with Lettuce. Dill attracts Hoverflies and predatory wasps, and its foliage is used as food by swallowtail butterfly caterpillars. Tomato horn worms are also attracted to Dill, so if you plant it at a distance, you can help draw these destructive insects away from your Tomatoes. Dill repels aphids and spider mites. Sprinkling Dill leaves on squash plants will also repel squash bugs,

FENNEL- Repels aphids, slugs and snails.

GARLIC - In addition to its great taste and health benefits, Garlic planted near roses repels aphids. It also deters coddling moths, Japanese beetles, root maggots, snails, and carrot root fly. When planted alongside Onions, they also deter moles and mice.

HYSSOP - Hyssop is great for attracting honeybees to the garden, and you will need them for pollination of some of your Veggies.

LAVENDER - Lavender is a favorite among many beneficial insects, including bees, and also repels fleas and moths.

MARIGOLDS - The Marigold is probably the most well known plant for repelling insects. French marigolds repel Whiteflies and kill bad nematodes. Mexican marigolds are said to keep away a host of destructive insects and wild rabbits as well. If you choose marigolds for your garden they must be scented to work as a good repellant. And while this plant drives away many bad bugs, it also attracts spider mites and snails--which are good.

NASTURTIUMS- You can plant Nasturtiums with my Tomatoes and Cucumbers as a way to fight off wooly aphids, white flies, Squash bugs, and Cucumber beetles. The flowers, especially the yellow blooming varieties, act as a trap for aphids.

PETUNIAS - They are great to have for color in your garden, and you get the added benefit that they repel Asparagus beetles, leaf hoppers, and a range of aphids, Tomato worms, and a good many other pests.

ROSEMARY-Deters Cabbage moth, Bean beetles and the Carrot fly

SUMMER SAVORY: Plant with beans and onions to improve growth and flavor. Include it with sweet potatoes. Discourages cabbage moths, Mexican bean beetles, sweet potato weevil and black aphids. Honey bees love it when it is in bloom.

SUNFLOWERS - I use Sunflowers as a way to draw aphids away from my other plants. Ants move their colonies onto Sunflowers. The Sunflowers are tough enough that they suffer no damage.

THYME-Deters Cabbage worm

ADD A STRAW BALE OR TWO TO YOUR GARDEN

If your ground is too hard to work, you end up getting a late start, or if you just don't feel like cleaning up in the Garden, you might want to look into getting a few Straw Bales for your Spring/Summer Garden. If you haven't tried this method, you might want to try it out on at least a part of your Garden. The ability to grow in a smaller space, no digging involved, and much less problems with insect pests is making more Families switch at least part of their Gardens over to Straw Bales. Here is some info on this gardening method from Joel Karsten.

Straw Bale Gardening is simply a different type of container gardening. The main difference is that the container is actually the straw bale itself, held together with two or three strings, the outside crust of the bale serves as the container. Once the straw inside the bale begins to decompose, the straw becomes "conditioned" and ready to plant.

The step by step process of conditioning creates an extraordinarily productive, warm, moist and nutrient rich rooting environment for young seedlings. Getting the straw bales conditioned is an essential part of the process, and should be started approximately two weeks prior to the target planting date in your area. This planting date varies greatly depending on where you are in the world but this gardening technique works anywhere in the world for seasonal spring/summer or for winter gardens.

Here is info on How To Condition The Straw Bales--This means wetting and fertilizing the bales for roughly 10 days to start composting the inner straw. For the first six days, put down 3 cups of organic fertilizer per bale every other day, and water the bales to push the fertilizer down and thoroughly saturate the straw. On the off days, simply water the bales. Days 7 through 9, lay down 1.5 cups of organic fertilizer each day and water. Day 10 put down 3 cups with phosphorus and potassium (bone or fish meal mixed with 50% wood ash works like a charm).

Growing a successful vegetable garden is difficult enough if you have terrific soil to plant your garden into, but with poor soils it can be virtually impossible. Straw Bale Gardening allows anyone, even those with the worst soil conditions, to grow a terrific garden that is productive and much less labor intensive. For anyone with difficulties bending over or doing the heavy work that is usually involved in turning the soil and digging to plant and harvest crops, the raised height of the Straw Bale Garden makes those chores obsolete.

Harvesting potatoes means simply knocking over the bale at the end of the season and picking them up, no digging required. Weeding will also become a thing of the past, there are no weeds in a Straw Bale Garden. Stop spending money buying containers, building raised beds, and buying special planting mixes. Minimal maintenance resulting in maximum production, through Straw Bale Gardening. It will completely change everything you thought you already knew about gardening. Try this method and I assure you that soon you will understand why this is the perfect way to grow a vegetable garden.

After setting up your Straw Bales in your Garden, you will want to add some great Heirloom Seeds. Here at THE SEED GUY, we have a great 60 Variety Heirloom Seed Package that would work well for you. It has 34,000 Seeds, all Non GMO, and all varieties are individually packaged and then put in a 10 x 14 silver mylar bag.

Whenever I travel to a country of origin and I face a cacao pod, the same question arises: who in their right mind would think of making something, not just edible but extremely delicious, out of this fruit? 😋🍈

We don’t go around trying to make gourmet food out of apple, melon or papaya seeds. That part of the fruit is simply discarded or planted for new trees. Instead, somebody around 5000 years ago must have decided that the huge and bitter seeds of the cacao fruit (spit out by all animals that prefer to suck on the juicy pulp) had potential for something special.

In a miraculous compounding effect, the following centuries saw an accumulation of ideas and improvements across countries that brought us from thick, corn-based cacao beverages for the elites, to smooth and shiny chocolate for everybody 🍫✨️

As a passionate chocolate lover, it’s disheartening to see consumers taking for granted the most complicated food of all. With all due respect for other fine foods, we aren’t just talking about fermenting grapes, roasting coffee beans or pressing olives. To end up in our mouths, cacao must be fermented, dried, roasted, cracked, winnowed, refined, conched, tempered, and molded. A single bar of chocolate was years in the making, travelled thousands of miles, went through many expensive machines, and required the coordination of hundreds of people across the world.

Yet, people get outraged if it is more expensive than 3 bananas 😒💰🍌

And the frustration continues when you think of the false myth of raw chocolate. Aside from the fact that by default cacao reaches temperatures way above what is considered raw, the word RAW implies a product pretty close to nature and achieved without much human manipulation, therefore with little effort. If anybody considers chocolate making to be “little effort”, then they’d better grab a book or two.

In a corner of my brain, I sometimes believe that chocolate was never meant to exist. It is a crazy invention of the human mind! From fruit to chocolate, the journey is humungous. No doubt it’s so hard to make it a business (without exploiting somebody in between).

Every bite of chocolate is truly a miracle 👅🍫🙏🏼

Mozambique announces visa exemption for 28 countries for tourism and business as Council of Ministers approve decree today.

The exemption applies to visitors holding ordinary passports and allows for a 30-day stay, renewable to an additional 60 days. The model adopted by the Mozambican government is similar to the US visa waiver program in the sense that it requires travelers to register on a platform for pre-screening at least 48 hours before traveling and to pay a processing fee of MZN650 (+/- £8,50).

President Nyusi announces Mozambique’s Economic Acceleration Measures Package (PAE) in August 2022
The visa exemption announcement follows the launch of a platform last December that allowed prospective visitors to apply for an electronic pre-authorization to travel into the country. Mozambique announces visa exemption for 28 countries after the introduction of the Mozambican e-Visa which reportedly has seen an increase of over 30% in the volume of travelers entering the country compared to the same period in the previous year. The eVisa platform commits the country to respond to applications within 5 days, but general feedback places an average response at 24 hours and the few issues reported are usually created by users not uploading the required documentation.

As Mozambique announces visa exemption for 28 countries, it advances measure 13 (which proposes changes for the Visa regime) of the Economic Acceleration Measures Package (PAE) announced by President Nyusi on August 2022 containing 20 reform measures aimed to deliver a path for a more competitive and more accessible country to visitors and investors alike. The stimulus package implementation is coordinated by a delivery unit created for the effect under the country's Ministry of Economy and Finance.

FACTS ABOUT HONEY CRYSTALIZATION

Don’t worry, it’s not spoiled and it has crystalized because it’s raw. There is a popular myth that says, pure honey never crystallizes.

So many people believe that when honey crystallizes it has spoiled or has been adulterated. In fact, crystallization is a strong indication that the honey is pure.

When you buy honey from supermarkets, it never crystallizes because it has gone through various procedures such as pasteurization and filtration.

Crystallization is the process by which natural honey preserves itself so that it does not spoil. Honey is super-saturated and contains a high concentration of glucose and fructose. Glucose has low solubility in water and due to that, it tends to crystallize. And as a result, glucose tries to separate from the solution.

Sometimes the honey also gets crystallized when it is still in honeycombs. Also, sometimes the crystalization depends on the source of the nectar with which the honey is made. Honey which comes from the nectar of flowers like “Sunflower’’ crystallizes if kept for a long time.
