Namibia has it's very own Ghost Town called Kolmannskoppe! 🇳🇦👻

Situated far in the south close to Lüderitz, Kolmanskoppe was once established in 1908 as a mining town after a diamond boom. Due to its relatively low population, for a short while, Kolmanskop was the town with the highest per capita wealth in the world.

The town had a local butcher, baker and post office. An ice plant was established to make blocks to use in food coolers as well as to manufacture the town’s own delicious lemonade. Elaborate houses were built to accommodate the town’s architect, teacher, doctors and mining managers. A large hospital employed two German doctors, one of whom was understandably popular for prescribing his patients an evening tonic of caviar sandwiches and champagne.

Around 30 years later, after all diamonds were depleted, the people moved back to other cities and left the houses to nature. The desert reclaimed the surrounding houses and is now a tourist attraction which shouldn't be missed!

Meet the Himbas of Kaokoland. 🇳🇦

A wild frontier indeed, the seclusion of the Kaokoland is the reason the semi-nomadic Himba Tribe can continue with their traditional way of life. The beautiful women and children of this tribe are unusual and striking with their red ochre coloured skin, intricate hairstyles and handmade jewellery.

Camp Kipwe is based in Damaraland nearby Twyfelfontein with a view over the Adba Huab valley. What is unique about this area is that it is the only place were the desert elephant lives in the world. Nearby at Twyfelfontein there are historical rock engravings to be seen, which go even back to 75,000 years ago. The lodge offer excursions to Twyfelfontein, Guided nature drives and self guided nature walks. If you are in the mood for a lazy day, you can also just chill at the pool.

HOANIB VALLEY CAMP | North West Namibia

Set in the surreal and remote Kaokoland of northwest Namibia, Hoanib Valley Camp is special and alluring for so many reasons. Materials for the camp were all sourced locally and furniture and basketware were carefully crafted by local hands. The entire camp is solar-powered with virtually no footprint; it's built on decks and these too are mostly of recycled material.

Spend your days seeing the rare desert wildlife such as Desert Elephants on a game drive, communing with the local Himba people and learning their ancient ways, rhino tracking or stretching your legs across the sand on a nature walk.

In this place of empty space, yet brimming with rare life, you will feel invigorated, renewed and forever grateful for having been there.

DESERT ADAPTED ELEPHANTS 🐘

These are one of Namibia's greatest national treasures. Desert elephants are not a different species or subspecies, but they have adapted exceptionally well to the arid environment. They are leaner, needing less food, and have broader feet for traversing over sand dunes and rough terrain.

Did you know...? 🇳🇦

Namibia ranks as one of the least densely populated countries in the world.

According to Wikipedia, Namibia is 825,615 square km in size with a population of 2,645,096 million (estimate 2022), which means that calculated there are roughly 3,2 people per square km. To say Namibia is vast is an understatement.

It is twice the size of California (which has a population of approx. 39,5 million) and it's one and a half times the size of France (which has a population of approx. 67,8 million).

Namibia is said to be 99,88% land with only 0,12% of the country being water and yet surprisingly, it's one of the countries in southern Africa with the most subterranean water.

Interestingly, it also has one of the highest percentages of protected land over the international average.

Given the facts, it is the ideal place to travel! So much open space and endless landscapes as far as the eye can see. This is Namibia's charm and it's beyond beautiful for words. Namibia is the perfect getaway destination!
