The stone cross (padrao) planted by Portuguese explorer Diego Cao on the Namibian coast, more than 530 years ago, will be returned to Namibia. Cao planted the cross at what is known today as Cape Cross in 1486. Regarded as the first European to set foot on Namibian soil he planted the cross as reference point for later explorers like Bartolomeus Diaz (1487) en Vasco da Gama (1497). Portugal was looking for a sea route to India and these explorers were honoured to risk life and limb on behalf of the Portuguese nation who prided itself with a seafaring tradition stretching centuries.

Cao died on one of his expeditions and was buried at Cape Cross. The German Navy removed the original cross in 1893 and it was placed in the German Museum of History in Berlin. The German Federal Government’s decision to return the cross was hailed by Namibia’s Ambassador to Germany, Andreas Guibeb, as positive move forward to reconcile Namibians with the country’s colonial past and to set the colonial historical record straight between Namibia and Germany.

A most informing article on the subject of the padrao is quoted here-under from the website of Exploring Africa.
“Cape Cross, in Namibia, was discovered in 1486 by the Portuguese Diego Cao, explorer and navigator who, on behalf of King Joao II of Portugal, was looking for a sea route to reach the Indies.
Diego Cao faced a first expedition, that lasted six years, in 1482; during this journey, along the Western coasts of the African continent, he reached a place called Monte Negro, known today as Cabo de Santa Maria, in Angola, about 150 km South of today’s Benguela.

During his second journey, from 1484 to 1486, he went even further south and, in January 1486, reached today’s Cape Cross; he was the first European to explore this area.

The explorer Diego Cao has also erected two stone crosses, padrao in Portuguese, in the places of his landings: one was erected at Monte Negro, the other right at Cape Cross, which owes its name to this cross.

The Portuguese used to build crosses in the places where they landed; these crosses had different functions: a symbol of Christianity, documenting the possession of a territory and a point of reference for the other ships that passed by those places.
Cape Cross was the southernmost point ever reached by a European, only later Bartolomeo Diaz was the first European explorer to dub the Cape of Good Hope in 1488.
The cross, erected by Diego Cao, consisted of a stone pillar surmounted by a cross, positioned precisely to claim the territory; from that moment this place was named “Cabo de Padrao” that means “Cape Cross” in English.

After two years from the landing at Cape Cross the crew returned home without their captain; all documents relating to the expedition were lost in a fire, and some archaeologists tried to find out what had happened to Diego Cao and where he was located, all agree that most likely he went into what is now the Sperrgebiet National Park, the reason for why they consider this hypothesis probable is that some objects were found that probably belonged to him and different gold coins.

The inhospitable coast of Namibia did not arouse the interest of subsequent explorers, and Diego Cao’s cross remained there until the Ger-mans arrived on the Namibian territory between 1883 and 1884.

Raven, captain of the Wolf frigate, placed a wooden bulletin board at Cape Cross, in the years following that episode interest in developing a port in this place grew, as a result the presence of Europeans increased.

In 1893, Becker, the captain of the Falke flag-ship, who was looking for a better port than Swakopmund, found the Portuguese cross, removed it and took it to Douala in Cameroon, from where it was then transferred on the Stettin steamer that transported it to Wilhelmshaven in Germany.

William II, emperor of Germany, had a replica built and, on 23 January 1895, he had it positioned 15 meters from the place where the original cross was located; subsequently the original cross was transferred to the Museum of Technology in Berlin.

The place where Diego Cao landed was declared a national monument on November 1, 1968 and, in 1980, the Director of the State Museum of Windhoek took steps to erect a replica of the cross at Cape Cross: a new cross in dolerite, a stone originating in Namibia, was placed in the exact spot where Diego Cao’s cross was located and was inaugurated on October 11, 1980.

3 circular platforms were also made; while in 1986, on the occasion of the commemoration of the 500 years of the landing of the Portuguese explorer, stones were placed on which some information were engraved, one on each plat-form and one near the cross.

Over the years both Portugal and Namibia have exerted pressure on Germany to return the original cross, but Berlin has always refused to return the cross to Namibia; even after Namibia’s independence, when the first Namibian president, Sam Nujoma in person tried to get the Portuguese cross back”

Buffalo Park (Buffalo Core Area)

The Buffalo Game Park (the official name is Buffalo Core Area) is situated on the eastern side of the Okavango in the Kavango region of Namibia. The park has a size of 629 km² and belongs to the 2007 proclaimed Bwabwata National Park.

Buffalo Core Area - A great insider tip among Namibian game parks

The Buffalo Core Area is a good insider tip with absolutely amazing game viewing possibilities. Coming from Divundu, ten kilometres after the Okavango Bridge of the Trans Caprivi Highway you will find a sign “Buffalo” to the right.

The park is home to numerous game. Visitors will find large concentrations of elephants, buffalos but also - and this is special for the Buffalo Park - big herds of roan and sable antelope. Warthog, kudu, impala, reedbuck, red lechwe and of course hippos and crocodiles are also seen quite often. Predators which visit the park are lion and leopard.

Several game species including elephant, buffalo, zebra and wildebeest do seasonal movements. They remain at the Okavango River during the dry season and move inland during the wet season. This seasonal cycle is an important natural mechanism that guarantees that the vegetation structure can be in a resting period during some part of the year. When the large mammals move inland predators can be seen very often on the river side.

A part of the Buffalo park is situated in the ruins of an old South African army station. These ruins are often visited by impalas and kudus. It is not forbidden to leave the car and climb on some of the large termite hills along the river side. The views and photographic opportunities from the ant hills are extraordinary. Please make sure that you are not disturbing any large mammals, lions or crocodiles when you leave the car, as some of them like to disturb back.

Opposite on the other side of the Okavango river lies the Mahango Game Reserve.

Kolmanskop (Afrikaans for “Coleman's head”, German: Kolmannskuppe) is a ghost town in the Namib in southern Namibia, ten kilometres inland from the port town of Lüderitz. It was named after a transport driver named Johnny Coleman who, during a sand storm, abandoned his ox wagon on a small incline opposite the settlement. Once a small but very rich mining village, it is now a tourist destination run by the joint firm Namibia-De Beers. - Wikipedia

Otjikoto Lake is the smaller of only two permanent natural lakes in Namibia. It is a sinkhole lake that was created by a collapsing karst cave. It is located 20 kilometres (12 mi) north-west of Tsumeb and only 100 meters from the main road B1. The lake was declared a national monument in 1972.

The diameter of the lake is 102 metres (335 ft); its depth is supposedly a maximum of 300 feet plus according to scans. According to a Namibian tourism information organisation, "the depth varies from sixty two meters at the side to one hundred meters in the center, and in some places leading off from the side depths of one hundred meters have been recorded", while an article in the Allgemeine Zeitung explains the depth problem: "the lake tapers into a lateral cave system making it impossible to determine its exact depth, estimated to be in access of 142 meters."

The lake was known to the San under the name Gaisis ("ugly"). When the Herero moved into the area, they named it Otjikoto (Otjiherero: "deep hole"). Namibia's Oshikoto Region, in which the lake is situated, is an alternative spelling of Otjikoto and derives its name from that of the lake. The first Europeans to discover the lake were Francis Galton and Carl Johan Andersson, who during their search for Lake Ngami came upon Otjikoto Lake in 1851.

The lake was a dumping ground for German Schutztruppe during World War I; in June 1915 German troops dumped war materials in the lake before surrendering to stop the South African and British troops from using them. Most of the larger pieces have been recovered and are displayed in Tsumeb Museum, but at least two cannons, along with quantities of ammunition, are still in the lake and can be viewed with a special diving permit. According to legend, the Germans also dumped a sealed safe into the lake. The search for it and the 6 million gold marks it is said to contain has as yet not been successful.

Botanist Kurt Dinter visited the lake in 1911 and collected several hitherto unknown species of plants, among them grass of the genus Rottboellia. Tilapia guinasana, a species of cichlid fish which naturally was only found in Otjikoto's sister lake, Lake Guinas, was introduced to Otjikoto Lake. The claim that Lake Guinas is connected to Lake Otjikoto by caves is frequently made but not proven as yet. - Wikipedia

Sossusvlei (sometimes written Sossus Vlei) is a salt and clay pan surrounded by high red dunes, located in the southern part of the Namib Desert, in the Namib-Naukluft National Park of Namibia. The name "Sossusvlei" is often used in an extended meaning to refer to the surrounding area (including other neighbouring vleis such as Deadvlei and other high dunes), which is one of the major visitor attractions of Namibia.

The name "Sossusvlei" is of mixed origin and roughly means "dead-end marsh". Vlei is the Afrikaans word for "marsh", while "sossus" is Nama for "no return" or "dead end". Sossusvlei owes this name to the fact that it is an endorheic drainage basin (i.e., a drainage basin without outflows) for the ephemeral Tsauchab River. - Wikipedia

The Quiver Tree Forest (Kokerboom Woud in Afrikaans) is a forest and tourist attraction of southern Namibia. It is located about 14 km north-east of Keetmanshoop, on the road to Koës, on the Gariganus farm. It comprises about 250 specimens of Aloidendron dichotomum, a species that is also locally known as the quiver tree (Afrikaans: kokerboom) because San people traditionally used its branches to make quivers. The forest is spontaneous; the tallest quiver trees are two to three centuries old. The forest was declared a national monument of Namibia in 1995.

The quiver tree is also known for looking upside down because the "leaves" look somewhat similar to roots. This tree has a long history of beliefs that it will bring good luck to anybody that worships a tree and nurtures it. Since diamonds are very rich in Namibia, people say that if one of these trees is dug up, one will get diamonds in their lifetime, but since these trees are blessed nobody wants to dig them up.

Near the forest, there is another site of natural interest (itself a tourist attraction) for its geology, the Giant's Playground, a vast pile of large dolerite rocks. - Wikipedia
