UK dependent visa application process from Nigeria ; A step by step guide
The process of applying for a UK dependent visa from Nigeria involves several steps. A dependent visa allows family members (spouse, children, or other eligible relatives) of a UK visa holder or British citizen to join them in the UK. The most common dependent visas are for family members of individuals with work or study visas or those who are settled in the UK.
1. Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for a dependent visa, the applicant must be a dependent family member of a person who is:
- A British citizen
- Settled in the UK (holds Indefinite Leave to Remain or Settlement)
- A person with refugee status or humanitarian protection
- A UK visa holder (work, study, or other)
Categories of Dependents:
- Spouse or Civil Partner
- Unmarried Partner (with evidence of living together for at least 2 years)
- Children (under 18 years, or dependent adults in some cases)
2. Gather Required Documents
You will need the following documents for the visa application:
- Valid Passport: For the applicant.
- Proof of Relationship: Marriage or civil partnership certificate, or birth certificate for children.
- Financial Documents: Proof that the sponsor in the UK can support the dependent(s) financially without recourse to public funds. This may include bank statements, payslips, or sponsorship forms.
- Sponsor’s Immigration Status: Proof of the sponsor’s visa, settlement, or citizenship status.
- Accommodation Details: Proof that there is adequate accommodation in the UK for the dependent(s).
- Tuberculosis Test: Applicants from Nigeria are required to undergo a tuberculosis test from an approved test center and include the certificate with their application.
- English Language Requirement: For some dependent visas (e.g., spouse visas), the applicant may need to demonstrate English language proficiency unless they are exempt.
- Passport-sized Photographs: As specified by UK visa requirements.
3. Complete the Online Application
The application for a UK dependent visa is completed online through the [UK government’s official visa application website](https://www.gov.uk/apply-to-come-to-the-uk).
- Select the appropriate visa type based on the dependent category.
- Fill in all the personal and sponsor details.
- Pay the application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) (if applicable). The IHS allows access to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) during the stay.
- The visa application fee varies depending on the type and duration of the visa.
4. Book an Appointment for Biometrics and Submit Documents:
Once the application is completed, you’ll need to book an appointment at a UK Visa Application Center (VAC) in Nigeria. The primary VAC locations in Nigeria are:
- Lagos (Victoria Island and Ikeja)
- Abuja
At the VAC, you will:
- Provide biometric information (fingerprints and photograph).
- Submit supporting documents (if not already uploaded online).
5. Attend the Biometrics Appointment
On the appointment day, ensure you arrive at the VAC with all required documents, including the appointment confirmation and passport. After submitting your biometrics and documents, the application is processed.
6. Wait for a Decision
The processing time for a UK dependent visa can vary, but it typically takes around 3 to 8 weeks for a decision. You may opt for priority processing to expedite the decision, but this comes with an additional fee.
7. Collect Your Visa
Once your visa decision is made, you will be informed about how to collect your passport and visa or whether it will be returned via courier.
8. Travel to the UK
If your visa is approved, you will be issued a vignette (temporary visa sticker) in your passport, which is valid for 90 days. You must travel to the UK within this period and collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) within 10 days of arriving in the UK.
Additional Tips:
- Ensure that all the information provided in the application is accurate and complete, as discrepancies may result in a refusal.
- Check for updated visa fees and health surcharge amounts before starting the process.
