It's World Rhino Day!๐Ÿฆ

Since 2010, the 22nd of September has been recognized as World Rhino Day, bringing together wildlife enthusiasts and conservationists from all around the world to raise awareness of this majestic yet fragile creature. The surviving five rhinoceros species, which were formerly common in Africa and Asia, are now confined to sanctuaries and protected areas. After decades of hunting fueled by the illegal wildlife trade and the market for their horns, these rhino populations are now starting to recover.

The initiative believes in changing the face of rhino conservation using technology and social media as a platform. The Rainbow Rhino initiative plans to introduce over 60 individual rhino into various reserves in Africa over a 10 year period. Within this period it is estimated that over 85 rhino calves will be born and that the foundation will have over 180 rhino to distribute to suitable locations in Africa.

What can you do to protect them?
๐ŸฆDon't buy rhino horn products. The illegal trade in rhino horn poses the greatest threat to rhinos today.
๐ŸฆGet involved in the Gondwana Conservation Foundation Rainbow Rhino Initiative which combats poaching.
๐ŸฆYou can also adopt an African rhino through the World Wildlife Fund and receive a plush rhino along with an adoption certificate and more.

Miradouro da Lua (Viewpoint of the Moon) is a spectacular landscape, shaped by thousands of years of erosion by rains and wind, which makes it look like scenery from the moon.

This set of brightly colored cliffs is unique on the planet and even an inspiration for movie directors.

Have you been here before? What was your reaction when you saw the rocks? Let's know in the comments ๐Ÿ˜Š

Lobito is a port city in the western part of Angola, right on the Atlantic coast.
Its bay, one of Africaโ€™s finest natural harbours, is protected by a 3mile (5km) long sandspit. The city is built on the sandspit and reclaimed land.

Lobito is home to one of Angolaโ€™s primary ports and an important industrial centre that manufactures small ships, refined sugar, canned fish, and building materials ~ britannica.com

The Giant Sable Antelope (palanca-negra-gigante in Portuguese) is the national symbol of Angola, and is held in very high regard here ~ it is portrayed on numerous stamps, banknotes, and even passports of Angola.

The Angolan national football team is fondly known as the Palancas Negras in honor of this antelope.

The Giant Sable Antelope symbolizes vivacity, velocity, beauty and visual sharpness.

Interestingly, male Giant Sable Antelopes turn black when they're fully mature while the female remain chestnut brown

It's called Samakaka ~ Angola's traditional textile print. Samakaka features bold geometric shapes in all colours from the Angolan flag: black (symbolizes the African continent), red (signifies the blood shed during colonial and independence struggles in the past) and yellow (symbolizes the countryโ€™s wealth)

The is considered the national animal of ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ฟ

With its disproportionately large ears, slanted eyes and pointy nose, the attractive little fennec fox is also the nickname of Algeria's national football team โ€“ Les Fennecs.

Their distinctive batlike ears radiate body heat and help keep the foxes cool.
They also have long, thick hair that insulates them during cold nights and protects them from hot sun during the day.

Even the fox's feet are hairy, which helps them perform like snowshoes and protects the foxes from extremely hot sand. Their feet are also effective shovels for frequent diggingโ€”fennec foxes live in underground dens.
