*When should you apply?

A Schengen visa can take up to three months to process, so it is best to apply as soon as your travel dates are confirmed.

*Collection of your Schengen visa
When your visa is approved and ready, you’ll be notified via SMS or email and you can either pick it up, have it couriered to your home/office, or have it picked up at the embassy by your appointed representative.

To collect your visa, please make sure to bring along:

*Your original receipt of payment

If your appointed representative is picking your visa up, please make sure that they have:

*The original receipt of payment

*What if your visa gets denied?

Your Schengen visa may be denied for a number of reasons. The most common reason for a denied visa is submitting incorrect information or not having all of the documentation at hand. To avoid this, make sure to submit everything that is asked for.

To save yourself the heartache of wasted money, it would be a good idea to get insured against this unforeseen circumstance.

*Solo Travel: Best Destinations and Tips

It is becoming more and more common to find individuals who are perfectly happy to pack up a suitcase, set off on a flight and discover a new destination – on their own! Solo travel has become more and more popular, as people are choosing to be more adventurous and chase their own dreams. So, with travel on the mind, where are the best places to travel alone to? How do you do it? What are the industry top tips for making it a safe and enjoyable experience? Let Travelstart be your guide!

Why is solo travel a good idea?
Travelling alone to a new and exciting destination can be liberating and plain old exciting! There are a number of reasons why and how this is a good idea.

You’ll see how independent you really are – nothing says ‘I’ve got this’ quite like setting off on your own somewhere!
You’re taking time out for just yourself – in this busy and stressful world that we all live in, you need to make more time for yourself.
You’ll learn to plan – there’s nobody else to help you make your hotel reservations, check flight prices and book your tours so by the time you’re done, you could do this as a career!
Your money, your rules – your solo trip can either follow a very strict budget or be a splurge. Either way, it’s your money, so you get to decide exactly how you want to spend it as you travel.

*You’ll gain confidence – when you travel alone, you have little choice but to be strong and confident as you make your way around unfamiliar surroundings on your own. Guaranteed, once you’re back home you’ll notice that you’ve become a braver, more confident version of yourself.
Solo travel doesn’t have to be alone – you could join one of many tour groups and though you may go by yourself, by the end of the trip you‘ll have met many new and interesting people that you would have shared many life-changing experiences with!
Is it safe to travel alone?
It certainly can be! To ensure that you’re safe throughout your trip, make sure to do plenty of research and choose a destination that is known to be safe. Read reviews, read up on do’s and don’ts in forums – be informed! Always trust your gut. Feel comfortable going scuba diving off the edge of a boat in Seychelles, but a bit less safe walking around after sunset in Fes? Do what feels right for you.

*Best solo travel destinations
*Italy – a destination for countless foodie experiences. Take a cooking class with other solo travellers and have some fun tasting and trying out new recipes in the cities of Florence and Naples. Paired with wine tastings of the region, you’re bound to have a wonderful time. Don’t forget to enjoy lots of gelato from the original makers!
*England – so much to see and do and you can always jump on the famous tour buses in the city of London. England has a great cultural scene and there are museum tours, pub tours, and a famous Harry Potter tour to join in on by yourself.

*Spain – ‘’when in Spain, go back in time’’ – how true is this for a country that has such a rich and diverse history? Wander through ancient castles, palaces and winding pathways through Seville and Cadiz, and try the tapas (perfect for one!) in Barcelona when taking a break from sightseeing.

*Thailand – this top-rated destination to travel alone to is perfect for that first solo trip. There are many tours to join when enjoying island hopping from Koh Samui to Phuket, and joining in on those famous full-moon parties!

*Germany – there are plenty of cities in this safe country that are ideal to travel alone to. Hamburg is ideal for visiting museums and galleries. Check out Berlin‘s art scene and the many pop-up galleries that you can see if you’re in the right place at the right time.

*Japan – this Asian country has it all and is great for solo or group travel. With its efficient transport systems, you can easily plan your days and not worry about getting lost or confused. Most residents of Tokyo speak English – a big bonus!

*Netherlands – one of Europe’s most-loved countries with a relaxed atmosphere and lots of friendly people, this is a great solo travel experience. In Amsterdam, make your way across the famous canals and visit world-class museums and gardens.

*France – the allure of the French culture and cuisine, of course, should have everyone visiting at least once in their lifetime. In Paris, plan your days visiting the well-known locations and stop at little delis for your delicious pastries and coffee.

*Dubai – this Middle Eastern country has more expats than locals, so making your way through this glittering destination will be easy-peasy as you can always stop and ask a friendly passer-by to take your picture! It may not be the easiest travel destination for a single female traveller but you can’t help but love Dubai‘s first-world facilities and perfect shopping!

*Tips for travelling alone

When it’s just you, make sure that you follow the advice and tips of others before you who’ve done this and enjoyed it! A bit of planning and research can go a long way from making your trip a wonderful experience to something that you’d prefer to never try again.

* Stay in touch
It’s a good idea to let someone you know and trust have a copy of your plans and documents during your trip. This way, should they need to get hold of you, they’ll know which hotel you’re scheduled to arrive at on a particular day, or which city you’ll be doing your trinket shopping in. It’s also good to drop your friends and family a quick ‘pop-in’ line. You don’t need to have a 2-hour phone call with them, but do send them a quick SMS or email when you have a spare moment. You can always use your Instagram photos as a social tracker.

*Do lots and lots of research, ahead of time
Simple things like having the exact train schedule or knowing the general prices of mangoes before heading off to the local market can really save you a headache. This way, you’ll be travelling with a sense of purpose and not walking around with a confused look on your face all day. You’ll also be less likely to be overcharged when store vendors try to charge you a ‘tourist’ fee for your goods.

*Discuss taxi fares before getting in
There’s no denying that when you travel, you do become a bit of an easy target to get some extra money from. Do yourself a favour when it comes to taxis and speak to the driver ahead of time. Make sure to agree to a price or insist that he or she keeps the metre running, thus not able to charge you extra.

Survive Flying with a Baby Like a Super Parent.

Flying with a baby can be a challenging experience. Not only are you worried about keeping your new tiny human safe, but there are the diaper bags to lug around, piercing cries to quell, and the scornful side eye from grumpy passengers. You are unfortunately THAT person.

Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be a stressful experience, for you or your baby, if you know what to expect and do a little bit of planning and research before you travel.

Here are some FAQs and answers

Is it safe to fly with a baby?

Flying with a baby is safe when he or she is old enough and healthy enough to travel. Young babies have developing immune systems and airplanes can be breeding grounds for germs. The recirculated air in a plane can be particularly harmful if another passenger is sick and sharing the same air with your baby.

How soon can you fly with a baby?

There is no standard regulation, but most airlines will insist that your baby is at least 2 weeks old. If you are travelling with a newborn baby you may need to provide a fit to fly letter from your paediatrician.

It would be best to wait until your baby is at least 2 months old, but ideally between 4-6 months old, before taking a trip.

Different airlines have different policies on this so you should check before booking flights.

Do you need a birth certificate to travel with an infant?

If you are flying with a baby outside of Nigeria you will need a birth certificate for your baby. It is always a good idea to call the airline you will be flying with and find out which documents you will need.

Do you need a passport for a baby?

Yes. Everyone needs a passport to travel regardless of age. All minors will need a passport and a birth certificate to travel. The passport for travellers under 16 years old is valid for 5 years.

What is a letter of consent?

If you are travelling alone with your baby you will need a Child Travel Consent letter. It is a written statement from the other parent that grants you permission to travel out of the country. It must not be older than 6 months when you begin your trip.

In special circumstances, these may be required:

A court order granting the parent full parental responsibilities or legal guardianship of the child;A death certificate of the other parent; An adoption certificate. What can you take on a plane for a baby?

You are usually allowed extra luggage and carry-on if you are flying with a baby. You are also allowed to take baby gear and products such as lotion and food.

Can you bring baby formula on an airplane?

Baby products such as breastmilk, formula, and baby food are allowed on airplanes and are exempt from the liquids rule. It will still need to go through security, so bag it in a Ziploc, pack it at the top of your luggage, and declare it when you pass through the security screening.

Note: Buy bottled water after going through to security instead of using the water on the plane.

Do diaper bags count as a carry-on?

Assuming they are not enormous and can fit under the seat in front of you, diaper bags do not count towards your carry-on allowance.

Can you take a stroller and car seat on a plane?

Passengers with babies are allowed to bring along a collapsible stroller and a car seat on most airlines, free of charge, along with their normal luggage. They will have to go through the security screening process and will need to be checked in at the ticket counter or the gate.

Some airlines have restrictions when it comes to the weight of strollers, so find out what these are from the airline you will be flying with. Car seats are only allowed in the cabin if they are airline approved and you have booked an extra seat.

Do you have to buy a seat for a baby on a plane?

Babies up to 2 years old do not need tickets to fly if he or she will be sitting on your lap throughout the flight. The airfare for a baby is usually about 10% of the adult fare. Many airlines prefer babies to be secured for safety reasons, and booking an extra seat can be worth every penny on an overnight flight to the Caribbean.

If you’re planning to hold your baby through the flight, let them know at check-in that you’ve got an ‘infant in arms’.

Try out this slick travel trick:

The middle seats usually get chosen last, so book a window and aisle seat if you are travelling with your partner. If the flight isn’t full you may just find yourself with an empty seat for your baby, and if it does fill up just ask the person in the middle if they would like to switch to the window seat. People will rarely turn down the offer.

What helps babies’ ears when flying?

Feed your baby during take-off and landing or bring out the dummy. The sucking will relieve the inner ear pressure and prevent any ear pain. If that doesn’t help, try gently rubbing their ears.

Can you nurse on a plane?

Some airlines have policies that support nursing on flights. Some do not have any written policy but have said they respect the rights of nursing mothers. And some recommend that mothers cover up on flights to avoid the wrath of disgruntled passengers. This varies from airline to airline so it would be best to call ahead and find out what their policies are.

Secret travel tip: Choose the window seat if you plan to breastfeed on board – they offer the most privacy.

Some useful tips for flying with a babyBook a direct flight if possible. Transiting through several airports and long layovers can be hellish with a crabby baby in tow.Fly during naptime. The longer your baby is asleep in the air the more time you have to relax and get ready for the holiday ahead. There is less chance of delays and airport chaos if you fly first thing in the morning, and midday flights are usually the emptiest and a great choice if you are hoping to score an empty seat for your baby.Choose a bulkhead seat if possible and find out if the airline has bassinets. These are great for international flights.Make use of priority boarding if your baby isn’t the cranky, squirming type. Boarding first also ensures you get enough space in the overhead bins.If you’re travelling with a partner, let him or her board first with the carry-ons and board the plane last with your baby. This could prevent your baby from getting cranky or overexcited while you wait for everyone else to board.Consider investing in a baby carrier. Having both hands free can make navigating the airport, security, and boarding much easier.A dummy or favourite toy can sometimes be a great way to get a baby to stop crying on a flight.Check-in online to avoid the extra queues.Do a diaper change as close to boarding as possible to avoid awkward poo expeditions in a tiny cubicle 30,000 feet in the air.Pack a change of clothes for you and your baby just in case you end up covered in baby puke. A plastic bag will also come in handy to stow away the soiled clothing.

So, get the correct travel documents, find out about airline policies and airport regulations, and be wise about what you bring along with you. Those are the most important things you need to remember when flying with your baby. The rest is a beautiful adventure for you to enjoy with your little tot!
