Gberefu Island, also known as the Point of No Return in Badagry, was the last spot on African soil where slaves from the Badagry set foot.
They were chained hands and feet to the beach and marched to the Atlantic Ocean, where they were loaded onto ships and shipped to the America and other parts of the world.

Half way down the road sits an attenuation well, where slaves to be transported were given water from this well in order to hypnotise them.

History has it that the well was charmed by chief priests, so that the slaves who drank from the well became weak, unable to fight against the slave masters and would not be able to remember their homes. The effect of the hypnosis does not wear off until after 3 months.

Sadly ,any slave who made it to this point had no chance of returning home as implied by the name.

The Mobee Slave Relics Museum, located along Mobee street in Badagry-Lagos, Nigeria, is a place where the original slave relics (shackles and remnants of equipment and machinery used to capture slaves) were kept and preserved after slave trade was outlawed to show posterity about the trade in slaves and to preserve the memories of the early centuries.

The Slaves Relics in the museum include:
• A mouth-lock used in preventing the slaves from talking to each other and from eating the sugarcanes in the plantation.
These metals will be dipped into the fire to render them red-hot before being inserted between the slaves' lips, causing them to groan in pain while working on the plantation.
• A hand chain used to hang rebellious slaves to a tree while others continue to work.
• Small hand cuffs for babies are used to bind children together in check while their parents worked.

The ancient town of Badgary plays host to the first storey building in Nigeria.

Its foundation was laid by Reverend Henry Townsend a missionary of the Church Missionary Society (CMS) in 1842 and was later completed by Rev C.A Gollmer in 1845.

The building served as the official residence of St Anglican Church and comprises of 2 sitting rooms, 6 bedrooms, four stores and a safe.
Some of Nigeria's greatest missionaries and famous individuals have stayed in this residence.

It accommodated the first gospel preachers in Nigeria, as well as Samuel Ajayi Crowther, the man who translated the English Bible into Yoruba in 1845, and Mr Claudius Philips, Nigeria's first primary school teacher as well as many others.

The Badagry Heritage Museum, also known as the Black Heritage Museum Badagry is one of Nigeria's oldest tourist sites.

It is located along the Badagry Marina and was built in 1863 as the first District office of the British colonial government. It played a major part during the colonial era.

The museum exhibits hundreds of artifacts and historical relics documenting slave transport through Badagry, one of several places in Africa where slaves were exchanged before being taken to America.

The museum has nine galleries to explore, taking visitors on a trip through devastating memories of the slave trade, with documents, shackles, pictures, and other rescued relics from this terrible time in the city's history.

It covers the area's history and culture throughout the pre- and post-slavery eras, using artifacts and records from the people who lived there.

Our first Ije Explore was Ije Badagry.

Badagry is an anient historical town, slave port, the cradle of education and Christianity in what was later called Nigeria.

Our first stop was the First Primary School which was established in 1845 by the Anglican missionaries to educate the community.

The school was named the Nursery of Infant Church which was later renamed as St. Thomas Anglican Nursery and primary school by Rev. Golmer of the Church Missionary Society (CMS)

The classrooms were built to accommodate about 30 students each and contain a block of several other classrooms. The relics of the old school are still the same as it was till date, however the main school has been upgraded into an improved two-story building.
