June 11, 1994, was a significant day in Nigerian history. It was the day of the infamous “June 12” presidential election, which was later annulled by the military government.

On that day, Nigerians went to the polls to elect a new president, and the leading candidates were Moshood Abiola, a wealthy businessman and politician, and Bashir Tofa, a politician and former governor. The election was considered one of the most free and fair in Nigerian history, with Abiola leading in the early returns.

However, on June 23, 1994, the military government, led by General Sani Abacha, annulled the election results, citing irregularities and fraud. This led to widespread protests and unrest across the country, with many Nigerians feeling that the election had been stolen from Abiola.

The annulment of the election results marked the beginning of a tumultuous period in Nigerian history, with Abacha’s regime cracking down on opposition and dissent. Abiola was later arrested and imprisoned, and many other politicians and activists were also detained or forced into exile.

Despite the challenges and hardships faced by Nigerians during this period, the June 12 election and its aftermath remain a significant moment in the country’s struggle for democracy and human rights.
