Leave politicking, address hunger, unemployment facing Nigerians,NLC fires Tinubu

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has accused President Bola Tinubu of playing politics while millions of Nigerians suffer from hunger and insecurity due to government policies.

The NLC, the largest amalgamation of labour unions in Nigeria, also said it is troubled by President Bola Tinubu’s recent statement that the labour union lacks the moral ground to challenge his government since it openly supported an opposition presidential candidate in last year’s election. The president suggested that the NLC should instead focus on preparing for the 2027 election.

“President Tinubu’s insinuation that Labour lacks the moral ground to challenge his administration, merely nine months into office, is deeply troubling,” the NLC wrote in a statement by its president, Joe Ajaero.

“Moreover, his focus on partisan issues and the distant 2027 election cycle, rather than the urgent needs of the populace, further underscores a disconnect from the realities faced by Nigerians on a daily basis.

“The pervasive hunger, unemployment, housing insecurity, and escalating costs of basic necessities such as food and healthcare demand immediate attention and decisive action.”

Mr Tinubu’s criticism of the labour union follows its insistence on embarking on a nationwide protest despite the government’s pleas.

The NLC’s nationwide rallies on Tuesday were to protest the alleged failure of the government to implement agreements it had with the labour union following last year’s removal of subsidy on petrol which has led to a huge increase in the prices of goods and services across the country.

In his Friday statement, Mr Ajaero insisted that the federal government was yet to implement most of the agreements it had with the labour movement.

“In any case, to avoid the dissipation of energy, it is important that we focus on the real issues because we have engaged the government since June 2023 after the subsidy is gone statement. The issues are around the non-implementation of agreements reached between us and the government,” Mr Ajaero wrote before listing some of the agreements reached.

You Can’t Fight Me, Tinubu Dares NLC

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday condemned the recent protest by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), warning the Labour movement to know that it is not the only voice of the people.

He spoke at the commissioning of the Lagos Red Line Train connecting from Agbado to Oyingbo.

The Labour Union had on Tuesday staged a protest over hardship in the land as well as the refusal of the federal government to implement agreement reached with the unions.

But Tinubu came hard on the Labour in the course of his remark, saying Labour Union should understand that despite its acclaimed right and freedom, it cannot fight an administration which is just nine-month old.

This is just as Tinubu stated that there was no going back on his reforms despite resistance by those he called ‘smugglers’.

He also reiterated that corruption is fighting back and vowed that the government would exterminate corruption.

Tinubu said the current hardship occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of the exchange rate is temporary, begging Nigerians to persevere.

“There is very bright light at the end of the tunnel. Nigeria will be out of economic problem, we just need to persevere and work hard,” the President declared.

But facing the Labour, he reiterated that the NLC is not the only voice of the people and warned the congress to maintain peace.

“Allow me to throw a jab here. The Labour Union should understand that no matter how much we cling to our freedom and rights, to call for strike within 9 months of an administration is unacceptable.

“If you want to participate in the electoral process, meet us in 2027. If not maintain peace. You are not only voice of Nigeria.”

The President said the commissioning of the red line was the culmination of the vision he nursed 25 years ago when he was governor of the state, calling for more collaboration between the Ministry of Transport and other states to develop railway infrastructures across the country.

Abia First Lady Distributes 600 Bags Of 50kg Rice

The wife of Abia State Governor Mrs. Priscilla Otti, has distributed 600 bags of 50kg rice, 1,000 rubber of 2.5 litres of groundnut oil, and cash to support Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in the state.

Addressing the beneficiaries at the event held in Umuahia, Mrs. Otti emphasized her commitment to supporting PWDs amid the economic challenges.

She reiterated her dedication to offering assistance and opportunities for vulnerable individuals, expressing confidence that the palliative support program will lead to positive outcomes in the future.

“I know that members of your community might not have fully benefitted from them. We are going to work assiduously to ensure that you are included in these interventions,” Mrs. Otti stated.

Mrs. Otti expressed her joy at witnessing the remarkable efforts of many members within the disabled community who have utilized their exceptional abilities to achieve self-reliance despite facing challenges.

She assured Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) of the government’s commitment to providing support and opportunities for self-sufficiency, with the goal of significantly improving their lives.

She urged philanthropists and individuals with goodwill to support the government’s efforts in enhancing the welfare of PWDs.

Speaking with journalists Mrs. Otti discussed her ongoing data collection initiative for PWDs to gather relevant information for providing tailored interventions to meet their specific needs.

She explained that this process would involve collecting details such as names and bank information to facilitate targeted support.

She said, “Also, beyond giving the palliative, these people need other forms of help that would meet their needs, especially for those that need assistance to improve their means of livelihood to be self-reliant”.

Airlines Record Safest Year On Record In 2023 — IATA

Last year was the safest ever for commercial air travel, despite a massive rebound in passenger flights, an airline industry group said Wednesday.

The only fatal accident of a passenger plane was the crash of an ATR turboprop operated by Nepal’s Yeti Airlines during a domestic flight, killing 72 people, according to the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) annual report.

The IATA said it counted another 29 accidents in 2023 that did not involve fatalities or loss of the plane.

In 2022, there was a total of 42 accidents, of which five were fatal and took 158 lives.

The IATA counts a non-fatal accident as an event that causes damage of at least $1 million or equal to 10 percent of the plane’s value.

IATA statistics do not cover business, military, private, maintenance or training flights.

The IATA said “2023 saw the lowest fatality risk and ‘all accident’ rate on record.”

“On average a person would have to travel by air every day for 103,239 years to experience a fatal accident.”

The low crash rate came despite the number of flights last year rising 17 percent to 37.7 million, the IATA said.

The IATA represents some 320 airlines comprising 83 percent of global air traffic.

“Even if flying is among the safest activities a person can do, there is always room to improve,” said IATA Director General Willie Walsh, citing “two high profile accidents in the first month of 2024.”

In January, a Japan Airlines A350 Airbus was safely evacuated after bursting into flames at a Tokyo airport.

In the United States, a panel blew off the fuselage of a Boeing 737 MAX during an Alaska Airlines flight, again without any serious injuries.

Economic hardship: NLC suspends protest, gives FG fresh two-week ultimatum

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called off the Wednesday February 28 2024 protest.

This is as organised labour revealed that the seven days initial ultimatum given to the federal government has been extended by another seven days to elapse on March 13, 2024.

The NLC President Joe Ajaero disclosed this at the end of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja to ascertain the successful ex*****on of the Tuesday nationwide protest.

Disclosing the outcome of the meeting, Ajaero said that the NEC in session has resolved to shelve tomorrow’s protest.

He said, “NLC to suspend street action for the second day of the Protest having achieved overwhelming success thus attained the key objectives of the 2-day protest on the first day

“However, nationwide action continues tomorrow with simultaneous press conferences across all the states of the federation by the state councils of the Congress, including the national headquarters.

“To reaffirm and extend the 7-day ultimatum by another 7 days which now expires on the 13th day of March 2024 within which the government is expected to implement all the earlier agreement of the 2nd day of October 2023 and other demands presented in our letter during today’s nationwide protest.

“To meet and decide on further lines of action if the expiration of the 14 days Government refuses to comply with the demands as contained in the ultimatum”.

THE WHISTLER reported that the NLC stormed the National Assembly in Abuja to press their demands on the hardship caused by the devaluation of the naira and the removal of fuel subsidy.

Tinubu Directs Release Of 42,000 Metric Tons Of Grains

President Bola Tinubu has directed the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to release about 42,000 metric tons of maize, millet, and other commodities in strategic reserves to address the rising cost of food in the country.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris said this on Thursday at the State House in Abuja after a meeting of the Presidential Committee on Emergency Food Intervention.

According to Idris, the Rice Millers Association of Nigeria has also committed to releasing about 60,000 metric tons of rice to the markets.

“The first one is that the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has been directed to release about 42,000 metric tons of maize, millet, garri, and other commodities in their strategic reserve so that these items will be made available to Nigerians; 42,000 metric tons immediately,” he told reporters.

“The second one is that we have held meetings with the Rice Millers Association of Nigeria. Those who are responsible for producing this rice and we have asked them to open up their stores.

“They’ve told us that they can guarantee about 60,000 metric tons of rice. They will make that available to Nigerians; to bring out to the market to make food available.”

He also said there is an option of importing these grains “if it becomes absolutely necessary, as an interim measure”.

His comment comes on the same day that the Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas pleaded with Nigerians over the cost of living, saying the lawmakers feel their pains.
