The buildings are of Arabic origin, dating way back to the 19th century. They're typically square with big courtyards in the middle to let in lots of light and air because of the hot climate.
Another interesting thing is how close the houses are built together. Back in the day, families liked to live very closely; so they built special walkways between the first floors, kind of like mini bridges. This meant the women could visit friends and family without leaving the building or going out to the streets!
The most soothing thing about strolling through Stone Town is how the tall buildings shade you from the hot sun while you get mesmerized with the nice breeze coming from the sea. 🌊☺️

The Aldabra tortoises are one of the largest tortoises in the world weighing up to 200 kilos. They’re also considered one of the oldest creatures in the world and it’s estimated that the oldest tortoise in Changuu, Zanzibar is 196 years old. 😯
These tortoises were gifts from the British governor of the Seychelles; he sent four to the Island in 1919 and they bred to 200.
But…in the 1960s people began stealing the tortoises to sell as exotic pets or meat. By 1996, only seven fully grown were left on the Island. 😭
In reaction, the government moved 80 hatchlings to Prison Island (Changuu) for preservation where they're protected in a compound surrounded by trees.
Currently, there are about 100 tortoises of different ages and sizes living on the island.

On getting to the entrance of the hill you will see a great tree at the entrance of the ancient city of Idanre called the IRAYE Tree, 🌲 then you can now get prepared to take the steps to the great city beyond the hills of Idanre.
The Hill has 682 steps from the ground so be prepared to sweat a little because climbing up is like a mini aerobics session. ❤️🔥
