Did you know about the Toposa Tribe?

The Toposa are an ethnic group in South Sudan, living in the Greater Kapoeta region of the erstwhile Eastern Equatoria state. They have traditionally lived by herding cattle, sheep and goats, and in the past were involved in the ivory trade.

Being pastoralists, they have perfected their art of war and cattle raiding. They are able to spy and gather information about the enemy, water, pastures, etc.

They were armed with AK47's during the civil war by armies from the North and the South. Today these AK47's are used to steal cattle. The Toposa are resistant to the gospel, preferring to depend on spirit doctors to cure diseases and infertility.

Most Toposa shun schools and train their children to tend cattle/goats and to work in the gardens. Wives are unable to halt sexual practices of their husbands which lead to rampant AIDS and venereal disease. Alcoholism undermines family prosperity.

Men value large herds of cattle and multiple wives. Each new wife requires a dowry to be paid. The "dowry" is the primary motivation for the theft of cattle from neighboring tribes.
