Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced that is implanting a temporary cap on the number of international students who are issued study visas.

A release from IRCC shows that for 2024, the cap is "expected to result in approximately 360,000 approved

This will be a temporary 2 year cap.
Total quota for 2024 is 364,000 approved study permits a decrease of 35% from 2023.

Quotas will be allocated province wise based on the population.

Spouses of International students other than Masters/PhD and specialised programs in medicine and law - will no longer be eligible for Spouse open work permits (SOWP).
This will be implemented in coming weeks.

This will not apply to current study permit holders in Canada and their spouses who are looking to extend.

From Sep 01, 2024 only Public-Private Institution models, will no longer be eligible for PGWP..

New Update from IRCC

🎈You may apply for an 18-month work permit extension if your postgraduate work permit expires on or before December 31, 2023. There won't be a further work permit extension available to you if your current postgraduate work permit expires after December 31, 2023. This relates to the policy for temporary extensions of postgraduate work permits.

🎈Starting from January 1, 2024, there will be increase in proof of funds required for Canada study visas. The Proof of funds is no longer $10,000 plus.
The new Proof of funds is $20,635 plus first year tuition fees per applicant.
You have to provide additional funds, if you have dependents..

🎈Effective from Dec 7, 2023, if you have a study permit or have applied for one, you are permitted to work full-time in Canada till April 30, 2024.

Difference between Student visa and study Permit

🎈A Student Visa is a conditional authorization to enter into a country.

This means that even if you have a student visa, the officer at the border has the authority to deny you entry into the country.
a visa provides you with mobility rights to travel to and enter Canada.
