We are excited to share the news that Casa Verde has accepted an invitation to join CREA!, a non-profit based in the El Limón region with similar goals and a focus of bringing together people and cultures for a sustainable future.

Corrie Burdett, a long time personal friend and Casa Verde colleague, will be the new Executive Director of CREA! She brings an excitement for learning, extensive project management experience, and a strong sense of social justice.

The coming together of two organizations takes time and we are committed to work together to develop a strong foundation to ensure continues, long-term success.

Your sustained support of Casa Verde has given us so much encouragement, especially while taking the steps towards this new exciting path! We hope that you will continue supporting our new organization as we work together to help empower youth to become leaders of tomorrow.

The UN Development Program report titled “Citizen Security with a Human Face” cited Nicaragua as proof that poverty doesn’t necessarily generate violence.

Nicaragua, with a homicide rate of 8.71 per 100,000 stands in sharp contrast with its Central America neighbors, Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala which have homicide rates of 92, 69, and 39 per 100,000 respectively. Even Costa Rica is higher at 10.3 per 100,000.

National Police Chief Aminta Granera, the only former nun to head a national police department, describes the Nicaraguan policing model as “preventative, community-based, and proactive” and says the model works more to prevent than to punish crime. (La Prensa, Mar. 17)
