I planted 3 new trees today! Two avocados and the second mango trees were added to the line of mandarin, nance, and mango. That makes six fruit trees in an otherwise sparse field. Step by step, we will turn this into a tropical food forest!

Soil update: we are moving along nicely. Starting to bring the clay soil back to life by introducing organic matter, worms, and the basic ingredients to support the microbes and everything else that helps make a soil web successful. In just one month it has broken down so much more than I thought possible!

Transplanting seedlings today! The fence project is in full swing, but in the meantime I am going to grow these herbs and ornamentals in pots to keep them happy. For now, random horses, chickens, etc. wander through and eat all the greenery. Once we have a fence, we can find them some more permanent homes. Baby steps!

Major upgrade for the worms! We took them from their two humble 5 gallon buckets and upgraded to an extra large 40 gallon tote! We shredded cardboard and paper products and mixed in soil, sand, coco coir, aged manure, crushed egg shell and some compost. They are officially loving life in the new worm mansion. I can't wait to harvest all the castings in the coming weeks. Even with the small buckets, we have collected about half a garbage can full. Going to be using the castings to amend the soil for the baby trees, who are being planted soon. Stay tuned!

Can't wait to find space for these plants! One step closer to a tropical food paradise. 😁

February Freeze! No worries, everyone is well cared for and doing fine! The hens have their hot vitamin water and fresh fodder, and an outdoor heat lamp to keep the regular water from freezing. They are unheated in their coops (and much safer that way) but draft-free and huddled together at night. We have even started getting eggs again, and they are a beautiful mix of new colors and shapes. Poppy the pig has been snarfling snow, burrowing in the hay, and warming her buns by the outdoor chimenea.

Our mini pig, Poppy, is pretending to sleep while I rub her belly. Every time I stop, she nudges me. 😂

It's been a cool, wet summer but the garden is loving it! Lots of yummy food coming our way every day now. Snap peas and garlic have finished, strawberries are coming to an end, and in their place are green beans, raspberries, cucumbers, and so much more! Our tomatoes and sunflower plants are reaching sky-high and we are so proud. 😊

The baby chicks hatched, and a day early to boot! 4/6 of the eggs were fertile, and all four turned to chicks 😁

We are looking forward to the day we have baby chicks! Trying not to count them before they hatch. 😉

The new chicken coop is almost finished! We built it with plywood, recycled wood, and a large upcycled wooden pallet. It's the biggest one yet, and I can't wait to put the finishing touches on it! 🌈👷🏻‍♀️🛠🎨 🐔🐤🐥🐣❤️

Eggs, lovely eggs! The girls have been very productive these past couple weeks, even with the periods of very hot weather. We recently acquired a deep freezer (thanks to family!) so we have been able to save lots of garden goodies and feed frozen treats to the animals when it tops 90 degrees. And now we have ice for the waterers (and iced drinks for the humans)! Sometimes it's the little things that make a huge difference. 🌈🐓🌞🥚❤️
