The original construction created in 1516 as part of the city walls defending the harbour. The top half, designed by architect Hendrick de Keyser, was extended to its current, decorative form in 1606 and didn't change much since, as you can see from the painting of 17 century.
Soon after the apex was added, the gained the nickname "Malle Jaap" (Silly Jack) because its bells would ring at unpredictable times – or would be silent for days. •

Magnificent art for Monday inspiration.
Maestro Claude Monet created these vibrant paintins during his visits to the Netherlands. The French impressionist painter toured the Netherlands several times in 1870-1880 and made 42 Dutch landscapes and cityscapes.
Here are the “Houses on the Zaandam River” – one of Monet most famous paintings of the Netherlands, and “Tulip field in Holland”.

Yes, the amount of rain changes perception 😅

But how great these houseboats look with laundry hanged to dry! You can vividly imagine how the Amstel River and the famous Magere Brug ("Skinny Bridge") looked like 150 years ago.

Another peculiar speciality in Amsterdam’s architecture is former warehouses transformed into apartments complexes.
When the city was rapidly growing, wealthy merchants wanted to have warehouse close to their living quarters (to keep a close eye on their precious goods) - so these typical buildings are frequent in the old centre. It’s easy to recognise because of wooden shutters, as back in the days, there were no glass windows, and when cargo was loaded, the shutters would be kept closed.
Now it's redesigned into fancy city apartments with french balconies.

One of Amsterdam’s charming features - street libraries.
Found in most peculiar forms, from bookshelves in the middle of nowhere to stocks at vital cultural hubs. And the variety of books you could find there is truly impressive. And I always go for art and architecture ones :)

Here is one of my favourite places in Amsterdam-Noord - a former captain's village with wooden houses from the 17th century.
Buiksloterdijk and several neighbouring villages are now within the boundaries of Amsterdam.
Dijk is a dam in Dutch, and the village remained an important centre of waterways because of the canal built in 1662.
At that time, captains and officers of the famous Dutch fleet settled in the village.
And now it's just a quiet street not very far from the Amsterdam centre. •

Such a wondering mood today (probably because of the weather) that I decided to put together a collection of cruise ships 🛳
The port of Amsterdam in the centre only has the passenger terminal now, and the cargo terminal was moved down the river.
It was because of the large port that Amsterdam emerged as one of the most influential European cities in the 17th century. At that time, ships could go almost to Dam Square.

Amazing! The Old Church in Amsterdam is open again!

Yes, this is a very Dutch name. The Old Church (Oude Kerk) is the oldest building in the city; construction began in the 13th century.

Now it's the museum, and like all museums in the Netherlands, the church has been closed since the end of November due to a strict lockdown.

And while other cultural sites in the city are still closed, the Old Church has opened to maintain "mental health." And it's for free (donations welcomed).

The contemporary interiors of the church are a heritage of the 16th century. The Calvinist iconoclasts destroyed the original Gothic elements and decorations, so the church is almost empty. But some of the enormous stained-glass windows were restored.

I am thrilled to be able to go to Oude Kerk. It is one of my favourite places in Amsterdam. •

The Rijksmuseum building was designed by the architect Pierre Cuypers and was
opened in 1885.
The famous Great Hall area is intricately worked according to an elaborate allegorical scheme - from the material world, through the social world to the intellectual world.

Stain-glass windows in the Rijksmuseum depict:
•Painting
•Architecture
•Philosophy and Theology
•Poetry and Music
•Sculpture

The window on the left depicting the art of painting. It shows artists Willem Van Heerle, Lucas Van Leyden, Apelles and Rembrandt. And the other arts shown above them are the art of illuminating manuscripts, the art of producing stained glass, the art of fresco painting and painting at an easel.

Middle window dedicated to architecture, as architect Pierre Cuypers was considering it the most important of all arts. Four female figures in the lowest tier of the window represent the main architecture styles: classical, early Christian, Gothic and Renaissance. The qualities of each kind are suggested in the figures and their garb, as well as by the models of the buildings they hold. The first figure has a model of a Greek temple, while the other three Dutch buildings.
On the left side of the middle section of the hall is "Philosophy and Theology". Shown here are the familiar figures of Plato and Thomas à Kempis. The upper two lights of the same window, depicting scenes of teaching and study.
On the right side of the middle section is "Poetry and Music". These lights show Joost van den Vondel, poet and playwright, and Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, composer and musician. Both men are prominent cultural icons of the Dutch Golden Age and associated with Amsterdam.

The upper belt figures in the highest tier are representatives of the society of the time. The Architecture window shows a king, a warrior, a priest and a doctor; the Painting window has a fisherman, a farmer, a mechanic and a merchant; and the Sculpture window shows a builder, a weaver, a potter and a goldsmith.
Above these, in semi-circles, are four of the twelve representations of the
months of the year, which make a sequence across all three of the tall windows.

One of the striking cityscapes - look at terrific gables in this canal houses. The gables come in a variety of styles and additionally, give an insight into the history of the building. Over four centuries, the design of the facades evolved according to the fashion of the times. Initially, simple triangular gables were used; from 1600 onwards, the ”steps” gables were introduced. These had a more solid construction using brick and sandstone. Next came the ”neck” gable, named that because of the elongated silhouette. And the ”clock” or ”bell” gables were an evolution of the neck-gable and have a similar but broader shape, similar to church bells or mantelpiece clocks of . •
