From mid-March these fields will be full of flowers, colorful and joyful. For now, they are still sleeping under a dust of snow, which is quite rare in the Low Lands.
There are not so many Dutch traditions for the New Year’s Eve, but one is clear: eating oliebollen. Somewhere in the 19th century, a nationalist movement thought that traditions must be very important and they created one: they connected the oliebollen with the night between the years. And here we are, still going strong. The recipe was brought in U.S. by Dutch emigrants and the oliebollen became the popular donuts.
Happy New Year everyone! Looking forward to guide you in the Netherlands in 2024! 🍾🥂🎉
P.S. people waited in long rows today to get their oliebollen. I was privileged with these home made delicious balls full of raisings and small apple pieces, baked with love and patience.
The silence and peace of Volendam, The Netherlands, early in the morning.
Visit Keukenhof, the garden opened today, at 8 oçlock sharp. The first visitors were from U.S.
For hundreds of years, the canals of Amsterdam were the garbage bins of the city. And by researching that garbage we can find out so many things about the city and its people. During the construction of the North-South Metro line in Amsterdam, thousands of objects were found. About 10.000 were excellent documented and permanently displayed in the Rokin Metro Station.
Going out or into the station, you will not get bored on the rolling staircase. And if you want to know more, go online to https://belowthesurface.amsterdam/en/pagina/de-rokin-vitrines
You will be able to click on every exhibited object and find out its short story: coins, buttons, pipes, plates, mugs, even old mobile phones, objects that date from 1600 onwards.
Amazing installation in Kunstmuseum Den Haag: "Day and Night", a reaction of two Belgian artists - known under the name Gijs Van Vaerenbergh - to the work of M.C. Escher. It was specially created for the exhibition "Escher, another world" which marks 150 years since the birth of the fascinating Dutch artist. Definitely worth seeing it! Enough time to plan a trip to the Hague till September.
We experience a real Vermeermania with the sold-out blockbuster from Rijksmuseum. The only consolation (for those who still want to see at least one work of the famous painter while traveling to the Netherlands) is that on April 1st "The girl with the pearl earring" of the Sfinx from Delft - Johannes Vermeer - will go back home, to Mauritshuis Museum in the Hague.
In the meantime, intriguing images are exhibited in the room of the mysterious girl. A fantastic museum project: the public was invited to participate with their own "Girl with a pearl". These are my favorites.

Though a very cold day, the sun was very generous today with Amsterdam: it was the National Tulip Day, that marks the opening of the tulip season!
200.000 tulips were brought today in Dam Square. The theme this year is the same with the one of Keukenhof: Flower Power!
Looking forward to seeing you later this year in the most beautiful garden in Europe: Keukenhof! Book your tour in time! The garden is open only two months every year.
