Claire Felicie Photography. 'Loss' is the central theme in my work. Loss of innocence, loss of support, loss of loved ones.

How do we deal with the loss of loved ones, with the loss of dreams and illusions, and how we do we cope with these experiences? Can art give comfort and strength, or even offer a way out? Secondly, purity, or the search for purity is another important theme in my work.

Captured in my daylight studio: historian and writer Léon Hanssen, who wrote an excellent and by times hilarious biography about the Parisian years of the famous Dutch painter Piet Mondriaan. This year a new book by Hanssen will be published with my author's portrait of Léon on the back of it.

This Newyear's eve a fellow diver and very good friend of my eldest son was over from Miami to celebrate the NewYear with us at my place in Amsterdam. He had never eaten smoked eel (a dutch delight and tradition on NewYear' eve at my place) before in his life. Thankfully he enjoyed it very much! Yesterday I did a tour through the Red Light District, visiting again the spots which I shot during the lockdown of 2020 for my photo book Falling Man. We had a wonderful group! I was accompanied by a former inhabitant of the neighbourhood, Rudolf, who lived there in the Eighties and Nineties. He shared lively and sometimes hilarious stories of that period with us: a period so very different from now.

In Museum Tot Zover, situated at the cemetry De Nieuwe Ooster in Amsterdam, artist herman de vries has made a beautiful exhibition called 'vergaan'. Translated in English as (although not accurately) into..'perish'..In de vries' view death is not the end but the start of something new. He shows the beauty of impermanence and decay. The objects and artefacts he shows, like pieces of wood, newspapers, cans, branches - are all affected and erosed by time and transformed into something new to admire.

I had a very nice interview about my book Falling Man with Jan Mom of O***m Radio 4. You can watch it via NPOradio4.nl And listen to it on Spotify via the O***m podcast. It's in Dutch. Jan asked me why, in the time of corona and the lockdowns, I'd decided to take photos in the Red Light District and why I combined it with Christian religious symbols and the Memento Mori portraits. Answer in short: this 3 life themes, s*x, religion, death, all came visually together to an intensified degree in that specific time and specific place..

Could you help me with the publishing of my new photo book? Sybren Kuiper has made a beautiful design, but the actual printing is very expensive..that's why I need your support at Voordekunst.nl! LOCKDOWN IN AMSTERDAM 2020 I want to publish a book of my photos with the theme: M e m e n t o Mo r i- remember, you are mortal. When the C o r o n a v i r u s and the subsequent lockdowns brought public life to a standstill, I, Claire Felicie,photographer in Amsterdam, started asking myself how we in our culture deal with our mortality. With my analogue Rolleiflex in hand, I explored Amsterdam, its cemeteries, the St. Nicolaas basilica, as well as the Red Light District, usually crowded and full of sex workers, but now left empty and deserted. The churches were closed and it was forbidden to touch one another. EROS and THANATOS I started to think about how we as a culture deal with the primitive drives of sex and death (Freud: E r o s and T h a n a t o s) I asked myself some questions: Is the fear of death such that we no longer dare to live? Is it because we have, to a great extent, left the concept of the hereafter behind us, that we do all we can to avoid death, whereas it is the only one certainty that we have in life? Is it because we deny death, that we concentrate more on survival than we do on living? MEMENTO MORI My book, with photos of the deserted Red Light district, in combination with photos of graveyards, churches and portraits of people who are thinking about their mortality (the Memento Mori series), invites you to take time for s i l e n c e and c o n t e m p l a t i o n even without a pandemic and lockdowns.
