Mashujaa Day is celebrated on October 20th. If October 20th falls on a Sunday, the following Monday will be a holiday.

Mashujaa is Swahili for 'Heroes' and as such Mashujaa Day is also known as Heroes' Day.

It is a public holiday to honour all Kenyans who have contributed towards the struggle for Kenya's independence.

Our favorite restaurant in Watamu! At Watamu beach road named Saidi BBQ. Fresh chips and meat or chicken on the bbq. You can even bring your own caught fish and Saidi will prepare it for you. Streetfood as they call it as you literally eat at the roadside. Saidi is as friendly as they come and mama chips is always busy taking care of her guests!

A different profile picture? Hé, the name of this account changed!

Yes! We decided to change our accounts zebratourssafaris and kitesurfingkenya into BarefootKenya (watamu)! Why? Because we love Kenya and we love our life here and that's what we want to give to you, our followers. No posts to sell, no pitches about why you should come to Kenya or take kitesurfing lessons.

We want to go back to who we really are and take you onto a journey through Kenya, Watamu and our life here. The nature, the villages, the people and the adventures that life in Kenya has to offer, which in our case mostly takes place in Watamu, with its diamond beaches and deep bleu Indian ocean, only 1,5 hours drive from Tsavo, the largest safari park of Kenya.

Of course we hope to welcome you as a guest is the future and we are very happy to show you around. This is not the purpose of our social media accounts anymore.

If you want to take a tour or safari we will connect you to our local friend who is very experienced and will make your holiday the trip of your dreams. And Tom is also still kitesurfing and will enjoy to teach you the skills and take you onto the water!

So from today our name is BarefootKenya because we love the life, walking barefoot on the beach and being close to nature.

The old website: www.zebratourssafaris.nl is still up and running for you to search information and have an idea of what you can expect in Kenya and all about Toms passion kitesurfing!

Watamu is by far Kenya’s best kitesurfing spot due to the perfect wind conditions. Watamu’s diamond white coastline is over 5 KM long and the water is a perfect clear turquoise, it’s a true kiters paradise. Watamu offers amazing flat waters as well as challenging waves for either beginners and experienced kitesurfers.

Watamu offers plenty of restaurants, local handicrafts and culture all waiting to be discovered. In the evening you can have dinner at your accomodation or go and explore Watamu to find the best Italian restaurants next to local BBQ restaurants. Fresh fruit grows locally, therefor the juices and ice-cream are delicous and you should definitely try the differtent varieties.

One of the most special pictures I took last year. Two local village moms that take their little kids to see the elephants drinking and showering at their neighbouring forrest. How amazing is this location where you can see a family of up to 100 elephants go on with their daily routine.

De kustplaats Watamu heeft de meest spectaculaire stranden en tal van activiteiten voor een geweldige vakantie. Er heerst een ontspannen sfeer en er zijn tal van restaurants, lokale (souvenir)winkels en cultuur die allemaal wachten om ontdekt te worden.

Gede is een van de vele middeleeuwse Swahili-Arabische kustnederzettingen die zich uitstrekken van Somalië tot Mozambique. De ruïne van het middeleeuwse Gede omvat vele over overblijfselen uit vroegere tijden.
