Susteq Susteq aims to get safe and affordable water to families who need it through the Susteq solution. All in a healthy, sustainable and fair economic system.

The goal of Susteq is to facilitate sustainable water access to people around the world. Susteq’s technology allows local business and water organizations to flourish and expand their services to provide more people with clean and safe drinking water. The current challenge is often no sustainability and no scalability. By using water credits on a digital wallet, end users have a greater certainty

of access to clean drinking water. End users pay a fair price for drinking water which ensures that money is available for maintenance and management of the water supply. How does it work? A box is installed on the water supply, the so-called service hub. The enduser has a digital wallet (RFID chip) which is placed in front of the service hub. In exchange for digital water credits the end user receives several liters of water. An end user can buy digital water credits at a water kiosk. The owner of the water kiosk buys the digital water credits from the water organization via mobile payment. The back office is specially established for the water organization supplying the water. For each water point, the water organization can monitor the water supply and detect if there is a defect in the water supply, allowing the water organization to respond quickly to a malfunctioning and maintain and sustain the flow of clean drinking water. Susteq’s technology encourages local water companies and organizations in developing countries to grow. For more information visit www.susteq.nl or send an email to [email protected]

"In five counties, FH worked to build water kiosks, which are best understood as “water ATMs” managed by the community. Prior to filling up their jerrycans on their assigned day of the week, each member has a prepaid card that they must load with funds. When it’s their turn to collect water, the kiosks function just like an ATM. Scan your card to “withdraw” your water funds, and the water is automatically dispensed. Not a single drop is wasted, since the meter is pre-paid!"

"Residents in Juba, the capital city of South Sudan, find it difficult to access clean water. Many households rely on water trucks to transport and sell it to them."

"In 2016, the Mail and Guardian referencing Oxfam reported that there were about 300 registered trucks supplying water in Juba. The current number is unknown. Bicycles and donkey carts also carry water in the city."

The Drinking Trucks is a photo- story by photojournalist Diing Magot that documents how South Sudanese in Juba city access water from the Nile River.

"According to our findings, one out of every three hand pumps is inoperable [...] At the national level, based on estimates of non-functionality from Foster et al. (2019), it is about 25 billion CFA francs (38 million USD) invested in the construction of water points which are immobilized."

Research like this one by Victor Dang Mvongo in shows the high level of handpump non-functionality worldwide. "This [...] is due to the low economic viability of water point management, the poor functionality of water point committees, and the poorly structured handpump maintenance chain." It inspired to work on easy, safe and transparent ways of collection for water service providers, to make maintenance and expansion of possible.
