How is the water dispensed from the ATM?

In our last post we chatted about how to fetch water. Did you read this? Now let’s get you further informed on the Susteq water flow! How is the water actually dispensed from the ATM? Well, Susteq Water ATM's can accommodate 1 to 3 taps (outlets). The amazing thing is that these can be used simultaneously! So both you and your neighbour can fetch water at the same time. This increases efficiency and reduces queuing times.
The Susteq ATM standard tap diameter is 1", suitable for quick filling even at low pressures. Tap diameters are available up to 2" making the ATM also suitable for example for cattle water supply and truck filling stations. A smaller diameter of ½” is also available for dispensing small quantities of (filtered) water. The water flow stops if the requested volume (eg. 20L) has been reached or if the customer presses the button again. Specific water quantities can also be set per tap and even per token.

A new chapter in the Susteq story 💦 we are moving! 💦

On Friday June 27 Susteq is moving! No worries, not very far, we will still be within the city of Enschede. But, as we will be packing waterhubs, solarpanels, coffee cups, office plants and laptops to be transported to our new location it might be a bit difficult to get in touch with us. This is Thursday June 26 and Friday June 27. We will reply to you from our new offices as of Monday June 30. 💧 How can I fetch water from the system?

A very important topic this time: How can I fetch water from the system? It all starts with your blue token! If you do not have one yet then reach out to your local contact person. Now if you do have the token make sure you have water credits on it. You can buy water credits via cash, mobile payment or via an integration with a billing system. These credits are then loaded on your blue user token, immediately ready for use! Just press the button corresponding to the tap, present your token in front of the reader and water starts flowing!

Can I install the system myself, a question that does pop up from time to time. Yes, no worries. The system comes with user-friendly manuals, available in English and French. ➡️ Where can the Susteq Water Hub be installed?

Now last time we talked about the general use of the Susteq solution. Did you miss it? Find the post in our feed.

Now this time we like to answer a question we often get: Where can the Susteq Water Hub be installed? Perhaps a difficult question as no situation is alike. The Water Hub is therefore delivered as a modular system that can be built in a metal or concrete casing or in another existing structure. Common installations are in existing water kiosks, in a standpipe or on a purification unit. Check these pictures for some examples.

How does the Susteq Solution work?

A prepaid water dispenser is the Susteq solution. But what exactly is this Susteq Solution? Let’s start at the beginning: At Susteq we believe that every person has the right to have access to affordable, safe drinking water. However, for one in ten people on this planet safe drinking water is not within reach. Utility companies, NGO’s and local governments do their part to improve this situation and build water infrastructure and local water points. This water infrastructure needs to be maintained and expanded, which often is not possible without revenue generated from the water supply. This results in damaged or even non-functioning water supply, and communities that are left without safe, easily accessible and affordable water.
The Susteq Solution decreases the supply of non-revenue water and generates more income out of water supplies. The resulting income can be used to update, improve or expand existing water systems and to ensure that more people have access to safe drinking water.

Now let’s get into detail on the system: The Susteq prepaid water solution consists of: the Water Hub, Shop Hub, tokens and an online monitoring dashboard. Let me explain this a bit more detailed to you. The Water Hub is the actual dispenser, a prepaid water dispenser (also called water ATM, water meter or prepaid meter). End users go here to fetch water, usually a fixed amount e.g. 20 liters for a fixed price. Payment is done by presenting the token to the monitor on the water hub. The token can be charged at the Shop Hub via mobile payment. Via the online dashboard the water service provider can monitor the flow of water and the flow of credits. The total of all this connects the existing water infrastructure and enables customers to pay a fair and transparent price for water. The Susteq Solution is designed to ensure easy and reliable access to water for customers while helping water service providers manage their resources. It connects to existing water infrastructure and enables customers to pay a fair and transparent price for water. And the brilliant thing….it can be accessed 24/7!

A Susteq Story: Innovation for Sustainable Water Access

In 2013, a group of engineers that had worked and traveled in Sub-Saharan Africa saw that water points that had been installed were often broken or abandoned. Communities were left without access to safe drinking water, and funds for the infrastructure investment went to waste.

Inspired by these challenges, the team first developed a monitoring system to track the functionality of water points. While this provided valuable data, it became clear that monitoring alone wasn’t enough—preventative measures were needed to ensure long-term functionality. Susteq was founded in 2015 with a new approach: prepaid communal water meters that not only provided access to clean water but also enabled sustainable maintenance through small user payments.

By collecting micro-payments for water, water service providers could fund necessary repairs and maintenance, reducing reliance on external aid. Additionally, the system itself serves as an early warning tool, helping water providers detect and address technical issues before they lead to full breakdowns.

Fast forward to today, Susteq has supplied 1,500 prepaid water meters across 12 countries, ensuring sustainable, reliable water access for 300.000 people every day.
