GLOBAL WARNING UPDATE: Giethoorn’s water is drying out for the next 2 months.

At the moment, we cannot report the progress of Giethoorn to stop the waters from drying out because it was just APRIL FOOLS.

We hope you enjoyed our little prank news. The news was fictional and intended to raise awareness about the pressing environmental issues we face globally.

While it was just a joke, it's crucial to remember that environmental concerns are very real (not a joke) and require our attention and action. Climate change, pollution, deforestation, and other factors continue to threaten our planet's ecosystems and biodiversity.

It's essential to stay informed and actively participate in initiatives that promote sustainability and conservation. Whether it's reducing our carbon footprint, supporting renewable energy sources, or advocating for policies that protect our environment, every action counts.

Let's use this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to preserving our planet for future generations. Together, we can make a difference and ensure a healthier, more sustainable world for all.

GLOBAL WARNING: Giethoorn’s water is drying out for the next 2 months

In the next few months, residents and visitors will witness a dramatic transformation in our landscape, which will create a significant problem for our future.

Experts explained the decline in water levels due to global warming. As a result, the once-thriving canals of Giethoorn are gradually shrinking, revealing stretches of mud and vegetation beneath.

Local authorities are scrambling to address the situation, implementing water conservation measures and urging residents to reduce their resource usage. Meanwhile, businesses that rely on tourism will face unprecedented challenges, with boat tours and water-based activities coming to a standstill.

Despite the adversity, the resilient community of Giethoorn remains hopeful and united in their efforts to overcome this unexpected obstacle. As they navigate through these challenging times, residents and visitors alike are reminded of the importance of conservation and sustainable practices in preserving the natural beauty of this beloved village.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as Giethoorn works to reclaim its status as a wetlands destination.

Today we celebrate Cow Appreciation Day with a heartfelt MOO-ment of gratitude! Join us in recognizing the cherished role of cows in our village's heritage and daily life. From the idyllic meadows in our Weerribben Wieden wetland to the world, these gentle beings play a vital role in our agricultural landscape, providing the best beef, nourishing milk, cheese, and contributing to the sustainable farming practices that define our rural culture.

Nestled in the village Nederland, Weerribben Zuivel, a dairy farm with years of excellency and experience, is committed to crafting premium dairy products, straight from their sustainably grazed cows in the Weerribben Wieden National Park.

As they graze in the meadows, cows shape the picturesque scenery, bringing a sense of tranquility and authenticity to our village. Today, we honor and appreciate our cows in Giethoorn for their invaluable contributions and their embodiment of the harmonious connection between nature and community. Cheers with a glass of Weerribben buttermilk to celebrate! 🥛🐄

Did you know that Giethoorn has mills too? This one still stands in North-Giethoorn as a remnant of the systems that used to keep the local houses high and dry. Nowadays, different systems are in place but the older ones still remind us of our age-old battle with the tides. Designed with functionality in mind, these wind-driven wooden structures were used to hoist water out of the canals and onto dry land, where it could be gathered and stored. This way, the canals were kept from flooding for generations, until electricity-powered counterparts took their place, easing the burden of keeping Giethoorn's foundations safe.

Given our proximity to wetlands, marshes, and lakes, it is common to discover moss flourishing in various places, such as on trees. Mosses thrive in environments that are both moist and shaded, making the moisture-rich bark of a tree an ideal substrate for their colonization. Interestingly, mosses play an essential role in maintaining the ecological balance as they contribute to water retention, facilitate nutrient cycling, and provide microhabitats for various organisms, including insects and small invertebrates.

Giethoorn is surrounded by Weerribben-Wieden National Park. It is one of the most important wetlands in the Netherlands. The unique area consists of reed marshes, swamps and wet grasslands. Therefore it is also the place where birds are happy. Thus, among others the stork as you can see from our office, the bittern, crake, purple heron and black tern visit us often. Other typical birds of the area are the golden oriole, marsh harrier, bearded tit and bluethroat. Did you already see the hoopoe? Let's focus on bringing back the hydrological situation preceding the reclamation of the North East Polder (adduction of seapage water rich in Iron and Calcium, fixing phosphate)!
