Technically, visually and psychologically, this series bring a lot to the viewer. The photographs are powerful enough that we do not need any subtext to read them. A brilliant catharsis for the viewers, a dark but enjoyable trip...’ Pauline Vermare (international center of photography in New York)
Artist Statement
My goal is to move people, like a piece of music. Within photography, I explore hu
manity as I experience it. My images appeal to sensory perception more than to that of the mind. By using black and white, contrast and grain, a parallel world is being created. A world in which light and darkness are allowed to exist side by side. Recently, my work is described as follows: “Beauty is not cultivated and ugliness does not seem to be a problem. On the crossroad of journalism, Dijkers exhibits poetry in the images of daily life, in a complex, undefinable way. The quality of his images is that they do not want to be more powerful than the world from which they originate.”
I am a member of noise collective, Dutch Contemporary Photography, Pictura and represented by Deelen Art Gallery (www.deelenart.nl).

A dream became reality!
My work in a double-exhibition with Henri Cartier-Bresson, during the G20 summit
Photographer Eli Dijkers shows images of alienation and connection during G20 summit in Matera.
There are major differences between the work of Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004) and that of Eli Dijkers (1978), but also similarities. In their own way, both portrayed the changes that took place in Lucan society in the post-war period.
Magnum photographer and founder Cartier-Bresson did that in two periods in the 1950s and 1970s. His reports portray important historical events that shaped the area in those years, such as the agricultural reforms, vaccination campaigns and industrialisation. The decay of the atavistic peasant civilisation is brought into sharp focus in a series of 26 photographs from the Rocco Scotellaro documentation centre.
The exhibition 'Tarsus' by Eli Dijkers shows work that the Dutch photographer made in 2018 during a stay as 'artist in residence' in Basilicata. His story, in one hundred images, crosses photographic genres and gives a multifaceted picture of the region at the bottom of the boot of Italy. His images subtly recount the contradictions and uncertainties of life in a peripheral region. The tone is melancholic, but the photos also show the resilience of the inhabitants.
Both photo projects tell about ways to overcome the feeling of alienation. Photography functions here as an instrument to pe*****te the meshes of a society. The exhibition 'Strangers and strangeness' offers moments of reflection on what we are and how we present ourselves.
The exhibition ties in with the theme of the summit of the foreign ministers of the G20 countries on 29 June 2021 in Matera. The theme "People, Planet, Prosperity" expresses how the fate of people is intertwined. Not only in the spread of a virus, but also in the recovery that follows and in the struggle for environmental sustainability, social justice and universal rights.
The exhibition 'Strangers and Strangeness' takes place under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture, the Municipality of Matera, Municipality of Tricarico, Region of Basilicata, the President of the Regional Council of Basilicata, Province of Matera, Municipality of Vicchio and is in collaboration with Ilford Imaging Europe.
The exhibition is curated by the Porta Cœli Foundation. Curator is Donato Faruolo.
28 June - 31 July 2021, Palazzo Malvinni Malvezzi, Piazza Duomo, 75100 Matera (IT). Opening hours: Thursday to Sunday, 10.00 - 13.00 / 15.00 - 19.00.

Change is everywhere in China. Cities seem to be tirelessly devouring their own history. When the bulldozers have done their work and the concrete has been poured, we see people wandering around in a new urban environment: uniform high-rise buildings, shiny cars and the unknown faces of the ceaseless influx of people that seek their fortune in the city.
Participate in the change or disappear, that is the choice faced by the population of modern China. Yet, there are invisible threads that connect the inhabitants of the city with 5,000 years of history. Occasionally, this hidden map of the past resurfaces. It leads the way through times of uncertainty and opportunities.
I am very grateful this work is part of the series. The series was first launched in September 2016 by our Consulate-General in Shanghai with an aim to promote further cultural exchanges between NL and CN through presenting Dutch artists and their works from different disciplines of visual arts. Light the light is a joint photography exhibition by Dutch artist Eli Dijkers and Chinese artist Neo Zhao was opened Saturday May 15 by Dutch Consul-General in Shanghai Mr. Remco van Wijngaarden. The exhibition is on view till June 20, 2021 at Pusu Art Space at MIFA 1862, Shanghai. This exhibition is a collaboration between the Dutch Consulate and Moyi Art Gallery.
Thank you CultureInChina, Neo Zhao and Moyi Art!
