Woohoo Amsterdam is back on the travel map! So why not finally take that trip to find out about your Dutch ancestors? With a few names and data our local host kicks off a so called “ancestor tour” by starting to research your family history in the Netherlands, and once you are on-site will take you to all places that have the slightest meaning or association. With a bit of luck, you will get to visit the houses where your ancestors have lived and sometimes there is even distant family that could be met. Even though you might be serving up for a smaller crowd this year, we know you’ll still make something special of the holiday. If you’re anything like us, it’s also a time when thoughts turn to holiday shopping (oh hi there Black Friday!). It’s a magical season here in Amsterdam, when decorations and colorful lights combine with the city’s canals to transform it into a fairy-tale destination. But belying its old-world charm, Amsterdam’s quaint, cobbled streets are home to a dizzying array of budding and established fashion talents. 👛

Can we help to calm the nerves? Have you heard of ‘poffertjes’, the little fluffy mini pancakes? They can be found at market food stalls, fairs and festive events, or in Dutch homes simmering in a special ‘poffertjes pan’ with their trademark golden brown skin, gorgeous smell and powdered sugar on top. An immensely popular sweet snack with children… but don’t worry, plenty of adults have a weak spot for poffertjes too (including ourselves!). Let’s hope for sweet times for everybody 🥞

Now that summer is officially over in the Netherlands we could not resist and 'take you back' to one of our favorite summer destinations in the country: Just a 2-hour drive from Amsterdam lies Zeeland (or ‘Sealand’ in English), the Dutch answer to Long Island’s Hamptons. This is traditionally where the aristocracy came to enjoy a ‘spa’ day courtesy of the healing salty North Sea. With its pastel huts sitting pretty atop sparkling white sand and glittering waters, it’s easy to understand its restorative appeal 🌊

Keep your eyes peeled for the Veluwe’s ‘Big Five’ - red deer, wild boar, mouflon, roe deer and foxes all call the park home. Why not join the park warden for a guided safari to uncover its hidden gems and secret spots – a real highlight! As you gaze round the vast plains, it’s easy to think you’ve switched the Netherlands for Namibia - but at just 60 minutes from Amsterdam, it’s definitely a more convenient option 🦊
