Floats...

Update:
We learned what they are: indeed stand alone FAD where flying fish would lay their eggs on the coconut leaves under water, and that in turn would attract other fish. These fish are then catched with fishing rods/ hooks.

Dozens of bamboo floats on the eastern side of the Kei Islands. We wonder if they are just stand alone Fish Attraction Devices (FAD) or if there are fishing nets between them? If so then down below, as we could pass /had to pass in-between with no problems and with no noticeable reaction of the surrounding fishing boats.

Happy we stalled offshore before daytime as these would have been totally impossible to avoid in the dark!

Landfall at Bahia del Salado, Isla Graciosa, Sociedad - Lanzarotte, Canarias.

After 3 days and 23 hours, 618 miles, 48 kn max gusts, 7 kn average, 14.8 kn max speed, 20 engine hours, great food, games, challenging fishing and some drumming. An exiting start followed by relaxing days with very nice boat speeds in calm winds.

Looking forward to roam the islands.

Leaving Gibraltar

with 40 knots of following wind and big seas against current hugging the coast. Doing 10 kn boat speed at a FANTASTIC smooth ride :-)
Just did a pitstop for cheap fuel at Gibraltar after 24hr sail from Roquetas de Mar.

First leap was paused for 2 days to wait for good wind after encountering an impressive hail storm. Gave us some nice time for cleaning, going up the mast, doing a fix of the rudder and extensive upgrade of provisions ;-)

The spirit aboard is excellent with good food, musical entertainment and 3 hrs shifts. Looking forward to the 600 miles passage to the Canarias.

See you on the other side!

Two Months of Spain

Days are getting shorter and nights are cold. Spotted a large christmas tree at the boulevard of Javea. It's time to move on to the Canary Islands.

We hooked the amazing clifs around Cape Negre, the towns of Moraira and Xabia, and 2 trips with friends to Ibiza and Formentera. Beth's arm is healing with still a very long way to go but ready to continue physical therapy at new locations.

Last 2 weeks in Valencia for work on the rig, autopilot, 2nd watermaker, electronics and Gandia for haul out with large maintenance of engines and installation of new folding propellors. Wanderlust is ready again to aim for the Pacific :-)

Roos farewell.
Almost one year after departing from Gibraltar the character formerly known as Roos took the bus in Malaga. I started to call you Simone, enjoying how you set yourself free and are loving your life. So proud on my first mate and confident that you will skipper a race around the world.
Thank you for all the adventures that made us grow together.

Bad luck - Moraira revisited.

Sailing is not only sunshine and happiness: Beth had an accident by holding on to a spinacker sheet upon our arrival at 3am in Moraira.

Docked the boat at the Marina and learned at the hospital in Denia Beth's shoulder has a complicated fracture which needs operation. So we will slow down for treatment and rehab and postpone the journey and birthday party at Ibiza. Very grateful to have good friends close by and thankful for their help; Harald, Abel and Aida!

About 1 year ago it was also here at Moraira the boat was stopped in an unfortunate way and with your help we got going again. The word Moraira holds several meaning amongst 'stay' or 'dwell' - so that's where you get with a boat named Wanderlust ;)

We had a fabulous few relaxed cruising days from Malaga to Roquetas del Mar, Cabo de Gata and Cartagena. Wished Beth for a nicer way to turn 50 and certainly we will make up for it very soon!!!

Welcome to the Med!
After departure of Tara in Porto and Uli in Lisbon, left Lisboa on a few night sails with Roos and sightseeing (plus a new haircut) in Sines, Cabo de Sao Vicente, Lagos.
On-to Faro to welcome Beth and explore Calutra Island to wait for nice wind to sail and stop-over for a drink at the beach in Tarifa. Went with the tide through the night past the strait of Gibraltar and motor through a flat sea to anchor in front of the beach and lighthouse of Malaga. Goodbye to Roos and now on with Beth along the Costa del Sol to Ibiza!

New crew! Warm welcome to Beth OKain - so happy you made it and looking toward a great time cruising the med.

It's only getting better!
Waking up late just in front of the beach of Sines. Planning to go ashore for a hairdresser and supermarket. Moving on later today to Cabo the Sao Vicente when the wind picks up and the fog at sea is gone. Sailing the nights, sightseeing the days and inbetween some swimming, good local food and a lot of sleep :-) this is how it is supposed to be.

Portugal.
Nice arrival after 7 days and ca 1000 miles at sea in Viana de Castello and on to Porto and Lisbon. First time Wanderlust past below a bridge to anchor right in front of the old center of Lisbon. Portugal, the climate, atmosphere and its people are great. Tara and Uli left to Germany, spending now some relaxed time with Roos exploring the city, doing boat maintenance and tonight some tapas and fado!
