The Elize, a re-purposed trawler, is currently berthed in Dormac’s Durban dockyard undergoing repairs and refurbishments. The project is nearing an end, and we’re happy to say that the Elize is looking great, and will soon be on her way. Keep an eye on our page for updates on this and other projects!

Our employees joined together to contribute R25 each to Iris House, which was matched by Dormac. Together, a total of R1,600 was donated to the children’s hospice, which provides care for special needs children and their families.

Apart from being leaders in ship repair, Dormac has a machine shop capable of creating and refurbishing parts for uses well beyond shipping. For example, we’re the preferred company specialising in manufacturing and reconditioning shredder rotors for the sugar industry, a lengthy process involving machining, hardface welding, heat treatment, fitting, balancing, and inspection. Dormac Cape Town has been tasked with changing out the Boronia’s main engine. Sounds simple? It’s not as easy as you might think! First the main and factory decks have to be cut open, and all the factory equipment removed to clear access to the engine. The old engine then has to be rigged out of the vessel and delivered to Wartsilla (OEM) so that components can be rebuilt onto the new engine block. The new 26-ton engine is then transported to the ship, rigged into place, and all the equipment and decks refitted. All in a day’s work for Dormac. Dormac has been hard at work on the Stingray. How hard? The numbers tell the story…. Weight of steel replaced: 8 tonnes. Area of main deck and hull blasted and coated: 9 000m2. Length of hot water system upgraded with Aquatherm piping: 320m. Sea chest inlets modified: 3. Plus we performed a 550 load test on the Leiberr Crane. So what do all those numbers add up to?
