This week’s best practices spotlight is on Abang Africa Travel’s commitment to promoting local craft and gastronomy through sustainable tourism.

Artisan development plays a crucial role in local economic growth and job creation, and tourism may be able to bridge the gap between rural and urban artisans, connecting them to larger markets and networks.

Abang Africa offers several excursions, including visits to Fairtrade-certified wineries, small-town markets for local crafts, and women’s craft cooperatives in townships. Their partnerships with Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa (FTTSA) and the Namibia Community Based Tourism Association (NACOBTA) ensure that their tours align with responsible tourism guidelines, benefiting local communities and preserving cultural heritage.

Projects and itineraries are carefully selected following their responsible tourism guidelines, ensuring that the people whose land and knowledge are used benefit from tourism. By showcasing authentic craftsmanship, Abang Africa helps elevate local artisans and cultural entrepreneurs, creating sustainable economic opportunities and fostering shared prosperity.

What other practices do you think could help promote local craft and gastronomy in tourism?

📆 Today, on the 17th of February, we celebrate the World Tourism Resilience Day.
🦠 Whether it’s a pandemic, natural disaster, or economic crisis, tourism is often one of the first industries hit. But when it’s resilient, it can adapt, recover, and keep thriving.
📊 In an unpredictable world, a resilient tourism sector can swiftly adapt to new trends and challenges, whether driven by shifting traveler preferences, advancements in technology, or unforeseen crises. This adaptability enables the industry to stay dynamic and recover quickly after setbacks. Since tourism is a major source of income for many developing countries, it is vital to approach this growth sustainably.
💪🏼 Examples of building resilience in tourism are integrated tourism planning, capacity building, and infrastructure development. These initiatives can help a developing destination become more adaptive and equipped to face future challenges. Ultimately, resilience in the tourism industry allows it to continue making a positive impact on the economy, society, and culture, even in difficult times, guaranteeing long-term viability and sustainable growth.

For this week's best practices, we’re spotlighting the impactful work of Heritage Expediciones and their commitment to giving back through donations.
🌿 Tourism has evolved over the last 50 years, growing rapidly while also facing its challenges. Today, travelers are more mindful of choosing companies and destinations that prioritize environmental and social responsibility. Sustainable tourism isn’t just a trend—it’s a necessity for the future of the industry.
🫂 Heritage Expediciones is leading the way with their donations to local schools, hospitals, churches, and artisans, as well as supporting their community through tough times, such as providing food and detergents for Daya Nivasa in Kandy which is a home for handicapped run by Mother Theresa's Sisters of Charity. These efforts show how tourism can directly benefit local communities, fostering stronger bonds and promoting equity and well-being.
📚 Donations don’t always have to be monetary—sometimes it’s sharing knowledge, skills, or in-kind contributions that make a difference. These initiatives strengthen company pride, improve relationships, and support the sustainability of tourism itself.
