🌏 Supporting Indigenous Tourism: A Journey Rooted in Culture and Connection

Imagine a travel experience that transcends mere sightseeing—where every step immerses you in the stories, wisdom, and resilience of Indigenous communities. The World Travel & Tourism Council ( ) highlights in its latest report that Indigenous tourism empowers these communities to share their heritage on their own terms, preserving their languages, traditions, and sacred landscapes.

📈 Indigenous tourism fosters cultural exchange while delivering essential economic benefits, creating jobs and bolstering local economies. In Canada alone, nearly 2,000 Indigenous-owned businesses provide thousands of jobs. By engaging in these experiences, travelers contribute to sustainable income streams that ensure cultural heritage thrives for future generations.

🌿 Respect for the environment is also at the heart of Indigenous tourism. For generations, Indigenous communities have acted as stewards of their lands, integrating conservation into their way of life. This form of tourism invites travelers to honor these values, protecting ecosystems and wildlife while promoting eco-friendly practices.

🤝 As travelers, we have the power to choose experiences that respect and uplift Indigenous communities. Whether participating in cultural activities or staying at Indigenous-owned accommodations, each choice contributes to a movement of respectful travel that celebrates the world’s oldest stories.

On September 16th, we celebrate the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, marking the 1987 signing of the Montreal Protocol—a historic global agreement that has helped heal our atmosphere by phasing out harmful ozone-depleting substances. The ozone layer is a critical protective shield for the Earth, absorbing noxious UV radiation, and its partial recovery so far testifies to what global cooperation can achieve.

💡Sustainable tourism now more than ever can play an increasing role in the protection of our environment. Travelife is one of the leaders in sustainability certification for the tourism industry and equips travel businesses to have a positive impact on the environment. Through innovative tools such as Carmacal, Travelife supports companies in measuring and managing their carbon footprint and hence practicing responsible tourism.

🌱 Carmacal brings a powerhouse of assessment capabilities that enable tourism businesses to take tangible steps toward a greener future. It identifies how much of the emissions come from transportation, accommodations, and other activities, which shall help the providers make informed decisions for offsetting their carbon impact and taking part in ozone layer protection and broader environmental goals.

Let's keep working together towards a future in which tourism will support communities and help take care of the planet. Happy International Ozone Day!

🐋 International Whale Shark Day on August 30 underlines marine conservation in sustainable tourism, and the whale sharks are singularly vulnerable to such threats as overfishing and habitat degradation.🌊 Responsible tourism is one of the effective ways that ensure the conservation of these species, and tour operators have a long list of best practices, which include maintaining a 3-meter distance, strictly limiting the number of swimmers, and prohibiting physical interaction and the use of flash photography. Additionally, tourism businesses should use reef-safe sunscreen, reduce waste plastics, and educate visitors on marine life conservation principles🦈Donsol in the Philippines is now an ecotourism model from a whale shark hunting site. In partnership with WWF AP, this city observes adherence to the principles of how to protect whale sharks, involve the local community, and uplift the economy.🐚Let's pledge this International Whale Shark Day to take care of marine life through responsible tourism.

🦧 Today is World Orangutan Day, a time to raise awareness about these amazing creatures that share so much in common with us. Orangutans, who live in the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra, are in danger of disappearing forever because their homes are being destroyed by illegal logging and the spread of unsustainable farming practices.

🌍 Sustainable tourism offers a powerful way to protect our planet by choosing travel options that don’t harm wildlife or destroy natural habitats. For those of us in the tourism industry, it’s essential offer conservation-focused travel experiences, to educate travelers on the importance of protecting animals like orangutans and encourage them to make environmentally friendly choices.

🧳 Today, as we observe World Orangutan Day, let’s think about how our travel choices can make a difference. Avoid tourism activities that involve close interactions with orangutans or visits to facilities where they are kept in captivity, unless they are verified sanctuaries, rehabilitation centers, or conservation projects that genuinely prioritize the well-being of the animals.

🔗 Learn more about our collaboration with Animondial, where we focus on guiding the tourism industry to adopt practices that safeguard wildlife and promote ethical interactions with animals. 14/08/2024

When we set out on our adventures, we’re often drawn to stunning lakes, rivers, and oceans. But here’s a surprising fact: tourism can actually strain these precious water resources! It’s crucial to safeguard these natural treasures—not just for the beauty they add to our travels, but for the well-being of the local communities that rely on them.🚰Sustainable tourism practices are vital in mitigating the impact of tourism on water resources. This means being careful about how much water we use when we’re staying in hotels or visiting new places. For example, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) reports that in European hotels, every guest consumes on average around 394 liters of water per night. In contrast, an average European uses between 120 and 150 liters per day at home. This means that tourists in hotels are using about three times the amount of water compared to their daily consumption at home. This excessive consumption puts unsustainable pressure on local water supplies, particularly in regions facing water scarcity. 💧 To make a difference, we can do simple things like reusing towels in hotels, taking shorter showers, or choosing accommodations that focus on saving water. These small actions add up and help keep the water clean and available for everyone. Plus, some areas, like Extremadura in Spain, are finding cool new ways to mix tourism with water conservation, making sure we can enjoy these natural spots without harming them. 🤝So, let’s make a promise to be mindful travelers, especially during Water Quality Month. By paying attention to how we use water and supporting eco-friendly practices, we can help protect these beautiful places for future generations. 🌍 On the 9th of August, the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, we celebrate Indigenous communities' rich cultures, languages, and knowledge systems. These 476 million people across 90 countries have a deep connection to their lands, and their sustainable practices offer valuable insights into preserving our planet.

🏞 Unfortunately, despite their significant contributions, Indigenous peoples often face challenges like land dispossession and cultural erosion. Sustainable tourism can play a crucial role in supporting these communities by respecting their rights, protecting their lands, and celebrating their traditions in a way that benefits them directly.

🎓 Educating ourselves is essential. The UN and other organizations provide resources to help us understand Indigenous rights and promote ethical tourism practices that honor and sustain these communities.

🌱 Let’s commit to responsible travel that uplifts Indigenous peoples, preserves their heritage, and ensures their voices are at the forefront of sustainable tourism.
