Today is National Memorial Day. In the Netherlands we commemorate the victims of World War Two. At 8pm the nation is silent for 2 minutes.
Ahoy! In 1609 the Halve Maen set sail. Under the command of captain Henry Hudson the ship was send out by the Dutch East Indian Company, in order to find a new route to the far East.
.
Instead the Halve Maen ended up at the North American coastline, in the river that would later wear the captains name. The discoveries led to the founding of a West Indian Company which founded the merchant town of Nieuw Amsterdam.
.
This is a replica of the original jacht the Halve Maen, built in the New York bay and since a couple of years to be seen in several ports in the Netherlands.

Amsterdam has a bike escalator to get out of the parking garage. How bicycle friendly is your city?
Not all Dutch East India company ships made it back in one piece. The cargo of one of these 17th century vessels is now part of the Rijksmuseum collection: Chinese porcelain, Sri Lankan cinnamon, Javanese nutmeg et cetera. History right at your heels in the Rijksmuseum.
Have you spotted this amazing canal house facade in Amsterdam?
And off you go!
401 years ago the English puritan community left Leiden, to set sail to Northern America. Along the way they changed their ship, the Speedwell, for the #Mayflower in Plymouth.
The English settled in a thriving community of the Wampanoags, in what these Europeans called New England. From these encounters the #thanksgiving tradition took root.
In Leiden, which was their home for 10 years, these Puritans left some traces. Other refugee groups were more successful in the Dutch Republic. Nevertheless there's a fine small museum in #Leiden, dedicated to the 'Pilgrim Fathers'.
Watching people from my favourite terrace. Always a joy!
