Escape the crowds and explore tranquil places in a historic neighbourhood. See Amsterdam with the eyes of a local!
We will show you more than the usual: iconic buildings and hidden courtyards. While strolling through the maze of little streets we will tell you stories spanning the centuries from Rembrandt until today.

Starting in the center you will learn about the origins of Amsterdam. On our way to the local neighbourhood of Jordaan you will:

– discover more about the history of the canal belt and encounter magnificent buildings like the Royal Palace
– visit hidden courtyards that housed sailors` widows and elderly people on charity in 1650 – one of the first social housing projects in the world
– explore the distinct lay-out and see the difference that this neighbourhood shows compared to the canal belt
– find out why both locals and art community fought to preserve the special character of the area when investors and the city tried to remodel it in the 1970s

Just a few more weeks and beautiful spring will arrive to Amsterdam. If you are planning to visit why not renting a boat and discover the city from the water at your own pace? Electric boats for up to 10 people are reasonable and you do not need a licence at all! They are easy to navigate and you can even organize a picknick on board!

Amsterdam evening boat trip. A great way to discover Amsterdam is by renting an electric boat with friends. You don’t need a license neither is it difficult to manoeuvre. Just enjoy the beautiful views!

Today we visited the most curious place you can imagine: the oldest still functioning planetarium in the world built in 1781. Eise Eisinga was a wool comber in the Frisian town of Franeker and his hobby was astronomy. He converted his living room into the planetarium and used his attic above for the mechanism. Every week the weights who move the system need to be lifted and every 22 years you need to restart the stick with the timeline by painting it with the years ahead. The planetarium shows the exact date, star sign , appearance and disappearance of the moon and many other facts! Absolutely fascinating!

Within this most beautiful historic building you will find one of the oldest cafés of Amsterdam. A great spot in summer to sit outside and watch the hustle and bustle in the streets: cyclist, pedestrians and cars need to pass this corner.

Today we are commemorating the victims of the Second World War: Dodenherdenking. On the evening of May 4th all over Amsterdam people come together in quietness and at 19:58h all of The Netherlands come to a halt for the duration of two minutes. The King traditionally puts down a reeve at the WWII monument in Damsquare while the LGBTIQ+ community comes together at the gay monument at the Westerkerk.
