Our lovely authentic farm in Abruzzo Italy is located in a valley called “IN FRAIA” in a natural reserve at the foot of the Majella mountain range part of the Parco Nazionale della Majella and a short drive from Parco Nazionale d’Abruzzo with beautiful flora and fauna. The farm is also within minutes of diverse Adriatic beaches, medieval castles, museums, festivals, markets, picturesque villages with authentic regional traditions, gastronomic delights, hiking, biking, rafting or just relaxing and being meditative with the help of the natural surroundings.
My grandfather bought this farm with what he earned risking his life traveling to America and working on the New York City Subway after WWI. He was then clever enough to invest in livestock during WWII to help plow the fields for higher productivity, mostly vineyards and olive groves. My grandparents, uncles and mother were driven from the farm by the Nazi’s. After being liberated by the Americans they were able to return back home. Many people lost their lives after the war upon returning to the fields because of the land mines. My mother was married at 15 to my father 10 years her senior to collect a subsidy Mussolini was offering to young couples to start families. My father got in-listed, later captured and sent to a work camp in Germany. After the war he walked all the way back to our town which was bombarded and mostly destroyed. After the birth of my sister my parents immigrated to New York by ship in 1956 on the Andrea Doria which collided and sank 40 miles off the coast. They survived with the few possessions they could salvage and I was born shortly afterwards in New York City. The farm was partly abandoned and when my remaining uncle passed away I inherited it with my sister. Now I have ownership of the entire complex with my husband and have restored it keeping it as authentic as possible. We have learned how to care for the fields, produce olive oil, appreciate the natural surroundings and now hope to allow others to appreciate this rich heritage, culture, beauty and peace “IN FRAIA”.
