Lucy in the Sky ‘Lucy in the Sky’, a single room hotel, combines the power of architects and visual artists into The Havenkwartier in Deventer is one such place.

Urban Landscape

You can see them on the maps of almost every city; the grey areas on the map that lie against the town centre. The first industrial areas where the city expanded his work area. They used to be modern, but now overtaken by the growing city they have lost their meaning for today's industry. The current industrial sites are increasingly shifted outwards further. The old edges are no

w in between working and living place, escaped to the attention and a bit forgotten in an armpit of the city. Long time unnoticed by the vision of urban planners, these areas leaded a life of their own. Similar to the back of the living in old urban areas, rarely raked and with a whole own messiness. Here are visible traces of time, as the wrinkles and age spots in a lived-in face. In the urban landscape, these are the adventurous areas, the undeveloped citypieces where a very unusual individuality is visible. This old workarea is now under attention as a development area and gets a second life. An important part of this area is used by artists and creative entrepreneurs as breeding place in de last years. The municipality of Deventer has developed an urban plan for this area in which live, work, culture and leisure are the main themes. There is chosen for a ' organic ' development model, a step-by-step change whereby the qualities that are already present in the area will form the starting point. The Havenkwartier is a raw area, where the tough atmosphere of port labour is still present. Here lies an exciting story, a small adventure and that is certainly true for the manner of area development that is chosen. A development outside the beaten paths, where the plan talks about a refuge for ideas. That calls for a particular position, literally and figuratively, from which you can experience this area. Unplugged

It's a human need at times to want to escape the stress and the speed of everyday life. You can go on vacation far away, but many people realize closer to home a private place, a refuge. The Garden House next to the conifers, the shed back on land, the greenhouse on the allotment and not to mention the ultimate escape, of course the tree house. All these places are often subject to personal interpretation, but generally answers especially to the desire to escape: ' to unplug '!. This is more than just a physical issue, it is also a mental need to look at things from a different perspective. It is in this spirit that looked at the position of the Havenkwartier in the city, which is the backyard of the urban landscape and to develop the activities in this area, then this is a still little named quality of the area. However, not everyone recognizes that in the Havenkwartier on a very direct way as experience. The Lucy in the Sky project focuses in particular on this other perspective and wants to bring out that quality of the area and stress. Art and Architecture
Lucy in the Sky is a project in which visual arts and architecture come together intimately. The result of this collaboration between architect and artist are designs for four small independent residencies, which can each be compared to a nest on a roof. These extraordinary sky loft residencies are works of arts, and to see them is to want to stay in them. They are not overwhelmingly big, but compact and human-sized. This makes them especially attractive and inviting to withdraw yourself in. During your stay in a Lucy, you are truly ‘unplugged’, without losing connection to your surroundings. In fact, a Lucy enables you to experience your surroundings in a very unusual way. The location and the position of the various Lucy’s have been chosen in such a way that the setting determines your perception of the area. Although a Lucy can be seen as an ‘Urban Retreat’, the position of a Lucy creates a framework in which you can experience the surrounding city as a landscape. The physical experience of seclusion, while you are in fact surrounded by a bustling city, causes you to experience a moment of escapism, a glimpse of ‘the Great Urban Outdoors’. Scenic Residence
At a Cultural Hotspot, such as the Havenkwartier likes to look at itself and where it grows to, belongs of course an equally notable stay and guest accommodation. With Lucy in the Sky with as an independent residence with a private entrance and use, to that question. Exclusive stay in a unusual setting and with always a look behind the scenes of the creative entrepreneurs in the port quarter. Lucy in The Sky is in the port quarter itself to use as a self-catering accommodation for artists (artist in residence), artists and musicians who, for example, want to stay professional in the port quarter. Also for tourists and the many visitors to the events and festivals in Deventer Lucy can evolve as a particularly scenic ' residence '. The port quarter itself will become more and more profiling with events and festivals, it is very special to that from Lucy in The Sky up close experience 24/7. This makes it a special way to also to outsiders the area and developing it to unlock and accessible. Lucy in the Sky can be a new brand image for the Havenkwartier, but will be the visual anchor point in the area for sure. For the design and development of the Lucy’s there are teams composed of architects and artists. Finding a good match is a prerequisite to achieve a particular result. Lucy in the Sky is an interesting project and touches the core of the cross pollination development plan for this area. It is relatively small, manageable and totally doable, but above all ' out of the ordinary ' and therfore for architects, designers and artists interesting to design with a particularly profiling. The aim must be to realize a national or international reputation with Lucy, only then it becomes attractive to parties both inside and outside the Havenkwartier. (implementation; think local, act local)
