Liberation Day
Every year on May 5, "we" reflect on the fact that we can live in freedom here in the Netherlands. And how important this is.
Although it is not easy for everyone, it is very safe here for most of us. There are few countries in the world where you can live better, according to research by the United Nations (the Human Development Report) and the Boston Consulting Group. And I agree with these results.
As always, everything has pros and cons; being aware that we should be very happy with our freedom and safety (in comparison with most countries in the world), has declined over the years.
I conclude this from the fact that Liberation Day is no longer a national holiday in recent years. For me, this is the most important holiday of the year (even more than Whit Monday - what are we celebrating on that day again??).
Nice thing, it seems that this "issue" finally reached the smart ladies and gentlemen in politics.
Two political parties in the Netherlands want to force the cabinet to take up the issue of making Liberation Day a paid day off from work for as many people as possible. Currently, many people in the country take the May 5 national holiday off from work once every five years.
