PASSING ON THE BATON
5 years ago we started the adventure of a lifetime! We bought sailingship Noorderlicht and continued the Arctic voyages in Spitsbergen & Northern Norway for which the ship is known.

In these years we've had the privilege to experience and show our guests the pure nature close to the North-pole, the Arctic wildlife & the most beautiful Northern lights. With all our heart we have taken care of this beautiful old ship, which dates back to 1910, and helped to preserve her for the future.

After our son Olivier was born we found out that sailing in the Arctic and family life does not combine so easily. To spend more time as a family, we've made the decision to pass on the baton to Swan Expeditions to be caretakers of this amazing strong ship.

We want to thank all the lovely guests that we have welcomed aboard, Oceanwide Expeditions, family & friends that supported us and all dedicated crew that helped us throughout the years. A special thanks goes out to captain Floris Spikermann Immink, who has always been there to help us with his excellent skills & knowledge.

Real daylight is rare during the winter month but it brings a lot of magic too!
Our guests are enjoying the magnificent scenic landscape of Northern Norway with majestic mountain peaks, the bird and animal life and the fairytale Arctic light. Moreover, this is the best place on earth to see the aurora borealis!

Happy Sunday: On our way for the Whales & Wonders Trips!!!
This October/November trips start in Tromsø and will lead us through the beautiful Norwegian Fjords and islands to the more northerly harbor town of Skjervøy. Large schools of herring have gathered here in recent years, attracting large numbers of whales. Our main goal is to sail to the waters where we have the best chance of spotting whales.

D-day at Tromsø!
Yes, this afternoon we finally welcomed our first guests here at Tromsø. That means we are leaving tomorrow morning for our first journey towards Skervoey where we will take a sharp look out for whales, sea eagles, elks and other arctic wildlife.

It's this season ...
From the end of September til may it's getting dark earlier in the afternoon which are perfect circumstances to see the aurora borealis. We're back in north Norway now, so fingers crossed for a lot of clear nights ... ✨

Capt's update: After Stattlandet we had a quiet night sailing towards Kirstiansund. But the weatherforecast wasn't good for us. So we decided to sail towards Rorvik, via coastal waters. Called harbourmaster of Rorvik but because of bad weather harbour is full. So we decided to sail 80nm towards Sandnesjoen. While sailing further north the latest weatherforecast seem to be better in the north...so hmmm shall we continue or go to port. Crew said let’s go north. After about 10 minutes wind picked up....the sea was white mountains around us and very bad view . Waves in the fjord system you won't expect. The wind was approx 9bft for 3 hours. After that the wind still was around 7bft. 2300hr LT wind dropped. Finally some sleep...not...2hr's later vicinity of bodo. Again 7bft weatherforecast told 4-5bft max. Spirit is high so we continue.

Captain’s update: Noorderlicht sails smooth, passed the point of stattlanded succesfully heading north. But there is a depression with strong gale wednesday giving us NE'ly gale. Noorderlicht can handle it fine but will the crew do to?

The trips in the Arctic spring are one of the most beautiful and purest trips that sailing ship Noorderlicht makes. It is the best time to discover the polar region in its most Arctic form.
The landscape is still pristine white and because there is often floating ice in the fjords, there is a great chance of spotting polar bears, seals & walruses. The bird populations that have taken shelter in warmer places in winter, the razorbills, kittiwakes, skuas and puffins are slowly making their way back to the Arctic and the first nesting seabirds can be seen.
From the end of April in Svalbard we experience the midnight sun, which means that there are 24 hours of daylight. In the mornings and evenings, the light is phenomenal, making these trips extremely suitable for photography enthusiasts. These trips are also very suitable for SKI & SAIL trips because of the snowy mountain peaks and coastal areas. Because few tourists have found their way to Spitsbergen during this season, it is often possible to ski on snowy mountain peaks where no one else has skied this year. An exceptional experience!

Wildlife in Northern Norway can come this close! 🐳🐋

From October onwards the Noorderlicht returns to North-Norway and starting from January 1st there are cabins available to join on this breath-taking adventure.
