The Hvaler archipelago also houses Norway’s first Marine National Park and because this region provides more sunshine than many other places in Norway, it is a perfect place for recreation in a peaceful environment. Next to the port is Gamlebyen - the old city - which is the best preserved fortress townin Northern Europe. Here you can stroll along the ramparts, feed the ducks and goats or just sit down on a bench and suck in the relaxing atmosphere. If you seek more excitement or adventure you can take a small river cruise with one of the free city-ferries to the lively centre and pay a visit to the quayside promenade of the inner city of Fredrikstad. The cities of Halden and Sarpsborg are only a short bus ride away, along the famous Ancient trail. Here you can explore Norway`s most concentrated collection of cluster and ancient monuments dating back to the Bronze and Iron Age.
