Promised stories.
Let's start with the "lighter" one. Yesterday and the day before, I gave a tour to the oldest tourist and his wife in my work history. When talking about Norway's card system during the occupation, I said that I doubted they knew what it was. I didn't expect they had it in the States. Well, they did and they remember it. Do you know the last time the United States had a card system? World War II. Yes, my camper was old enough to remember it and he was ~10 years old and today he is 91 years old(!) Can you imagine the man! He doesn't live out his days in a nursing home, but leads an active lifestyle. In two days we made up 6 hours of sightseeing. The last time he was in Oslo was in 1958. To make you realize how long ago it was I will give some examples. In the USSR times of Khrushchev, a year before the USSR launched a sputnik and Gagarin had not yet flown into space. By chance, we talked about birthdays and what struck me was that my tourist had the same name as my Shlomo and they were both born on the same day, only 81 years apart!
I love my job. Where else can you get such a boost of emotion!

Photo illustration - the shadow of the gate to the cemetery. Notice the hourglass? Time goes one way. If you are interested in this topic, I have a thematic tour of cemeteries in Oslo. And some statistics :)

There was an interesting article in the papers the other day. Not really on the topic of tourism, but for people who look a little spongier, probably will be interesting. What do Norwegians die of? With a population of 5.4 million, almost 46,000 people died in 2022. That's 10% higher than the year before. Causes:
1. heart disease - 10.381
2. Corona - 2,853 and 5 from vaccines
3. various illnesses - 45,947
4. accidents, murders and su***des 2,747.
Specifically:
1,036 died as a result of a fall ( mountain, ladder, etc.)
from drugs - 321. Increase from 2021 by 33%.
alcohol poisoning - 395. The article particularly points out that it was a difficult year and this affected the high number of
su***de - 610. In 2021 there were 660 cases.

Working on a publication takes time, especially when it comes to details. Yesterday I met with a man who witnessed some of the events covered in my forthcoming booklet, A Guide to Jewish History in Oslo. His name is Leif Gruzd. He is 91 years old, a former neighbor to Quisling, escaped to Sweden with his parents and thereby escaped death. Today he is the oldest employee at the Oslo Jewish Museum and works as a tour guide!
