The coronavirus lockdown have changed a lot of my plans this year. I was supposed to lead four Wildphoto expeditions to Svalbard in March and April, but none of them where possible to run with clients. With all the travel restrictions, it was no other options for me than focusing my attention locally – in my own backyard. Instead of photographing the biggest land predator in the world - the Polar bear - I ended up photographing the smallest land predator, the Least weasel. Follow my local project at: http://oleliodden.com/images/projects/in-my-backyard⠀

Four days ago we parked our expedition ship in the drifting ice at approx. 81,5 degree North. There were no polar bears to see in the evening and early night, but when the fog lifted in the morning a polar bear visited our ship. I had my polcam UW setup ready and got some nice wide angle split photos. One of the best ways of photographing polar bears in Svalbard is to just wait in the ice, and let the polar bears decide if they want to come close or not. ⠀

I'm just back in civilization after another successful expedition to Svalbard 4-14 August. We saw 12 different polar bears, some of them in great light and environment. We also had many great encounters with other wildlife, like arctic foxes, blue whales, little auks etc.⠀

I'm back in Svalbard, ready to lead the next expedition starting tomorrow. Last night I was photographing loons in the low midnight sun.⠀

Ivory gull photographed backlit in Svalbard last week. The midnight sun is great in end of July and beginning of August...⠀

A sleeping polar bear and a Ivory gull photographed during a expedition last week. It is great to observe and photograph polar bears (and other animals) who are peaceful and calm.⠀

I like to photograph the Ivory gull, and last week we had many chances. This Ivory gull was feeding in the slush ice and gave me the opportunity for an environmental shot.⠀

One of my favorite polar bear images from last weeks expedition to Svalbard. This polar bear was walking on top of an glacier and the graphic in the glacier is really interesting (do you see the feet of the polar bear?)⠀
⠀

I'm just back in Longyearbyen (Svalbard) after another successful expedition to Svalbard. We saw 10 different polar bears, some of them in great light and environment. We also had many great encounters with other wildlife, like arctic foxes, ivory gulls, little auks etc. This expedition was in cooperation with Ocean Geographic, and we had some memorable days.⠀
⠀

15/07/2019

We have just started a new expedition in Svalbard and we hope to have similar encounters with polar bears as we had on the same date last year (see image in this post). There is a lot of ice around Svalbard (northern and eastern side) at the moment which makes the conditions completely different from last year. I will be back again 4-14 August, and we have a "last minute" spot available (single cabin) if anyone are interested...

Finally the orchids are blooming close to home. It’s the first summer in this area and I had many recognization trips earlier without camera to find the right spot. Then, I’ve had multiple trips with camera, until the conditions were finally as I wanted last night. No wind, dramatic sky and a blooming dark-red helleborine (Epipactis atrorubens). I used a wide angle lens with shift function and 2x LED-lamps to get this shot. For me, this is how I work as a photoprapher - to visit the same place multiple times until I get what I have in mind...

One last image from Svalbard before the Easter holiday. These small Arctic fox cubs were playing and didn't care much about our group of photographers. We had this situation on our last day on Svalbard last summer, and everyone enjoyed it a lot.

Arctic enemies photographed during one of our photo expeditions to Svalbard. The Arctic fox is an all-year resident in Svalbard, but the Arctic tern migrate all the way to Antarctica for their vacation in the south.

Polar bear is the favorite animal for most photographers traveling to Svalbard. This bear was photographed on the eastern side of Svalbard in great light. With less ice in the Arctic the Polar bears are facing a challenging future.

Autumn is the best time for photographing big whales around Svalbard. The Humpback whale below was photographed last year on the eastern side of Svalbard. Blue whales and Fin whales are also usually easy to find near Svalbard in September.

Backstage from our group photographing gorilla in Rwanda a few days ago. Now we have finished our photography in Nyungwe and are ready to fly back home tonight. We have had some great moments and photo opportunities in Rwanda and hope to offer a photo trip again next year.

WildPhoto Travel

So far we have seen 4 species of primates in the Nyungwe national park in Rwanda. One of them was the Mountain Monkey photographed yesterday. Next 2 days we hope to see and photograph some more species of primates.

We are now done with our first full day in Nyungwe on our WildPhoto Travel Rwanda photographic safari. So far we have had 4 different species of monkeys and lots of birds. Most successful was our time spent with the Ruwenzori Double-collared, Variable and Regal Sunbirds

Rwanda is more than gorillas. This Mountain Chameleon was photographed yesterday evening just outside our hut at the lodge.

Rwanda is the right place to meet the big silverbacks. This big guy was feeding and didn't mind our group of photographers.

Now we are done with the Gorillas and the next days we will search for other primates and birds in Nyungwe national park.

WildPhoto Travel

Today we've had another great day with the gorillas. We visited the Kitwondo group and the animals were very relaxed. The juvenile gorilla on the image below passed us only a meter away, and it was photographed using slow shutter speed and panning.

21/02/2013

WildPhoto Travel

What a day! We had the first gorilla trek and found a great gorilla family with 2 silverbacks and 3 babies. It was raining pretty hard, but all of us was enjoying these great creatures. This was the first gorilla-meeting for all our guests, and we had some close encounters with the animals. This was the start everyone had hoped for.

In the afternoon we photographed some of the wild birds around the camp. For sunset we organized a special dance performance for our group.

We have just started our photo safari in Rwanda, with 7 nice clients from Norway, Russia and UK. Ole Jørgen Liodden is the photo guide on this trip, and the first day we photographed at a local market and some landscapes. Rwanda is called the country with "thousand hills" and as you can see from the image below we had a nice scenery on our way up to Volcano National Park where we will stay for the next 3 nights.

16/02/2013

Please follow us on WildPhoto Travel!

The Antarctic scenery is absolutely stunning, and all over Penguins are scattered in between huge icebergs and rough mountains.

This will be our last tease from the Antarctic for now. Tomorrow Ole Jørgen Liodden travels to Rwanda with a group of clients and we hope to post live if possible.
