An other incredible day on MS Fram! This morning we woke up cruising in the Bransfield strait amongst a magnificent scenery of tabular icebergs. Then plan B for the afternoon we landed on Astrolabe Island where our guests spent some times admiring the chinstrap penguin colony as well as Weddell seals sunbathing. On our way back most of us had fun watching a very playful leopard seal jumping around from one zodiac to the other.

The day began with a sea which was so calm it looked like liquid silver. But only a little later the horizon filled up with long, vertikal blows - we were entering Fin Whale central… Believe it or not, our scientists on board counted 263 sightings during the day, near and far. the outer decks were much crowded, while the long dark bodies shot through the water. With the majestic silhouette of Elephant Island in the background it became an unforgettable sight.
Two hours and many cetaceans later we arrived at one of the most dramatic spots in Antarctic history: Point Wild. What was to become a ship visit to the place of Shackletons men’s fight for survival would then turn out to be a more adventurous event: We set the Zodiacs in the water and went cruising in the ever-growing swell, blown over by snow and spray, and so getting a glimpse of the hardships that these 22 men endured for four and a half months more than a hundred years ago. Getting back into the warm, comfy ship showed us how well we are off compared to the ancient sailors. What a day…

Today was our last day in South Georgia and what a day that was ! This morning we zodiac cruise in Hercules Bay enjoying the macaroni penguins and divers fauna. Later on we reached Grytviken where our guest could go back in time through the remains of the old station whilst others went on a hike and were rewarded at the top by the splendid views over the lake.

What a day ! This morning we landed at Gold Harbour with a splendid weather and observed the magnificent wildlife there. This afternoon on our way to our 2nd location we crossed path with large groups of whales before landing at Godthul where we played hide and seek with the fur seals in the high tussac grass.

It was such a treat today to be able to land in Fortuna Bay. All our guests enjoyed the site and the incredible wildlife. When we reached the top overlooking the colony of king penguins it is always a very emotional moment.
Some brave ones went extra miles to undertake a part of the famous and historical Shackleton hike.

Today we had our first stop in South Georgia in Jason Harbor. We braved the rain and walked through the labyrinthic tussac grass always with the perspective of bumping into a dangerous pair of teeth.

It's been an incredible, busy season on MS Fram thus far, hence the lack of recent updates. But today, we want to share many of the highlights we've seen along the way!

We've been sailing past mind-blowing icebergs, walking amongst large penguin colonies in the midst of breeding season, toasting at the graves of famous explorers, and later following in their footsteps, zodiac cruising with seals and whales, kayaking through glacial ice at the bottom of the world, and much, much more.

While this all sounds like the stuff of dreams, these are the daily realities we strive to share with you during our voyages. Thanks to all of you for choosing team Fram & HX!

This morning we had nice send off for our last day in the Antarctic peninsula. Plan A was not accessible due to the ice so we decided to cruise in the middle of it!

The last 2 days have been rich on activities( kayak, photo adventure, science boat), wonderful scenery and incredible places. From Orne harbour and Cuverville yesterday we reach Paradise Bay and more specifically Leith Cove where some of us went camping overnight. This morning we cruised with our expedition boats outside Neko harbour. On our way to our afternoon landing Jougla point, we crossed path with a large group of orcas type B.

The Mission, should you choose to accept it…

We all know what that means on the Hollywood screen. Very rare occasions make something like this come your way in real life:
After a windblown but happy landing this morning we received an urgent mail from IAATO, containing a help request of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), one of the leading meteorological and environmental organizations worldwide. Some of the keywords were very striking: “…retrieve, remote glider, pilot, last coordinates, unable to dive…” In other words, a highly specialized underwater glider (think of it as a drone on steroids) had lost propulsion and was drifting aimlessly somewhere southwest of Deception Island, and with it priceless data on Antarctic submarine environments. After receiving the final position of the torpedo-like machine we decided to make the time and help our fellow scientists by trying to first locate and then capture their very expensive piece of equipment. Challenge accepted.
After establishing a 1:1 communication with NOAA we got updated locations on request instantaneously. That enabled the bridge to plot a course to intercept the glider on our way to Orne Harbour. The two dots on the electronic chart moved closer toward each other by the minute, the tension was palpable on the bridge and inside the ship (the guests were of course informed and joined the search with all the binoculars available.) It was our ornithologist George who spotted the yellow tail fin first in the very rough sea. Needle in the haystack does not quite do it justice, we just found a 2.5m object in the Antarctic ocean…
And that was the easy part. The weather went from bad to really bad, high waves and 40-knot gusts made it not a difficult but heroic enterprise for our fearless deck crew, with Bosun Renato at the helm of the Fast Rescue Boat. Everybody held their breath in excitement, while they had to catch a steely 100kg tube from the deck of a wildly bucking boat. And then - capture! With some more really tough maneuvering the ship managed to haul the price inside, and we could notify an overly happy NOAA director of - well, Mission accomplished.
Great cooperation between all on board, and a huge sigh of relief for a happy ending of the day!

It is the hallmark of great artists to make a grand entrance. Having this in mind, A23a turned out to be a REALLY great performer:
The biggest iceberg in the world, twice the size of greater London (including the Shard, Buckingham Palace, London Eye, but also the M1), was supposed to be literally in our way traveling down from South Georgia to the Antarctic Peninsula.
Speed, distance and sea state promised our arrival in the afternoon - and then there was fog, dense and bright. Nothing to distinguish at all, so slowly the disappointment started to grow on board to maybe miss one of the most spectacular nature phenomena on Earth.
Still, everybody graced the team from the British Antarctic Survey with their presence at the Question and Answer session in the Panorama Lounge.
And - with the last word of the last answer to the last question - the fog lifted and gave way to this gargantuan snow-white tabletop, made of water. Shouts of excitement, the noise of numerous camera shutters and the grave sound of the waves at the vertical ice front made an unforgettable soundscape, until finally the sunset arrived and ended the show. A must see…
