9 days to go!!

It’s nine days to until the start of our season…it feels like only yesterday we were out chasing the aurora at the end of last season, refusing to admit to ourselves that the nights just weren’t dark enough to see the green lady and we’d now have to wait until September.

Well guess what…it’s time!!!

Ever wanted to walk on water?
Okay technically frozen water but still…

For a short time toward the end of November once the temperature drops and before the first major snow falls of the winter have arrived, Kattfjordvatnet freezes over.
Locals and the lucky tourists in Tromsø during this time make the most of this short weather window by spending their days perfecting their ice skating skills on this natural ice skating rink, even just walking out on a frozen lake is a unique experience!
Also not a bad spot to witness the northern lights if you’re lucky enough (see last pic/post).

Not only is January a great time of the year to see the northern lights but towards the end of the month the sun starts its return after the long polar night.
The amount of daylight slowly increases little by little each day leading up to the third week in the month when it pops above the horizon.
This is a magical time of year when soft light creates beautiful pastel colours that are cast across the winter landscape resulting in truly a winter wonderland.

Another couple of weeks of Midnight Sun to go here in the north of Norway. As someone who comes from a place where there’s 12 hours of daylight then 12 hours of night (give or take) for 365 days a year, experiencing endless daylight for a couple of months is something I’m still getting used to.
Before I first experienced this phenomenon if you’d asked me which I would find harder to get used to, 24/7 daylight or 24/7 darkness (Polar Night - Nov to Jan) I would’ve thought the endless darkness but weirdly enough that’s not the case. There’s something about endless daylight that I still find…weird! 🤷🏻‍♂️😂
Just another unique part of living in Arctic Norway!
What about you? Would you like to live with the Polar Night or the Midnight Sun for a couple of months each year?

Grøtfjord is just one of the magical locations aurora chasers head to if the weather is playing nice along the coast. If you venture further into the end of the fjord the surrounding mountains make you feel like you’re entering a colosseum, the perfect arena for when the show above starts.

All things Tromsø… Just another reason to come and visit us in the magical north, the opportunity to head out on a whale watching tour and if you’re really keen, brave and not afraid of a bit of cold arctic water you can even swim with these beauties (see image 3).

While on tour you may be lucky enough to see humpback whales, fin whales, porpoises and my personal favourite the killer whale (orcas).

The whale season varies from year to year but typically the peak is between November and January when the herring come to spawn in the coastal areas off Tromsø.

Whales by day and aurora by night…sounds like the perfect combination to me!

The many faces of Ersfjord…

Ersfjord is located on the island of Kvaløya approximately 20km from Tromsø city.
A narrow fjord flanked by towering mountains on either side make this place look like a postcard from Norway. The surrounding peaks make it a playground for skiers and hikers alike with stunning views over the fjords of Kvaløya.
At the start of the fjord you’ll find Bryggejentene, a cosy cafe where you can relax with a cool drink after a scenic hike or warm up with a coffee and baked goods after hitting the slopes.
A visit to Ersfjord should be on everyone’s itinerary when seeing the sights of Tromsø 🇳🇴.

I’m Ryan…the other half of Northbound.
A Kiwi from Australia now living in Arctic Norway 😂

Ever since picking up a camera and becoming interested in photography, witnessing and capturing the northern lights was the number one on my bucket list…and now I’m lucky enough to live in one of the best places in the world to see it.

In Feb 2016 my better half introduced me to her hometown of Tromsø for the first time and I instantly fell in love with the place.
A white wonderland in the winter months and 24/7 daylight during midnight sun makes this part of the world an absolute dream for adventurers, nature lovers, photographers and aurora chasers alike!

Oli and myself are really looking forward to showing you why this place means so much to us!

Hi everyone!

I’m Oli, one half of the Northbound duo. I thought it was about time that I introduced myself properly!

I first arrived in Tromsø in 2019 for seasonal work to fund onward travels in a campervan. After becoming captivated by the sheer beauty of the area I found it impossible to leave and now it's a place that I call home.

It has been a dream of mine to start a tour guiding company for a long time and I can’t tell you how excited I am that it is finally happening.

The bonus of a Northern Lights tour during the months of November and December is the annual Geminid meteor shower. Visible from approx. Nov 19th through till Dec 16th (with the peak being Dec 13th) it is regarded as one of the best and most reliable annual meteor showers.
Imagine being out on tour with the aurora dancing above along with meteors shooting across the night sky…what a show!

Spring has announced its arrival here in Tromsø!

Nature is preparing for summer, as the darkness of night gradually fades, temperatures inch higher, and the snow begins its gradual retreat.

Very soon we will be entering the Midnight Sun period. From May 20th until July 22nd the sun won't set below the horizon. This means you can hike whenever you want!

Why not let us show you around? Come and join us on a Midnight Sun hike on one of the beautiful hikes around the Troms region.

A magical colourful display over a moonlit Lyngen Alps. People often ask if the aurora can be seen and photographed with a full moon and the answer is “absolutely yes!”
The general rule of thumb when chasing the aurora is to find dark skies (mainly meaning to get away from cities/towns and their light pollution) but it doesn’t mean you can’t witness stunning displays with a full moon present.
It some respects it’s actually beneficial, for one it lights up the landscape around you such as the Alps in the image above. It also means less fumbling about in the dark and generally makes everything a little bit easier when manoeuvring about.

Brosmetinden is a moderately easy and very rewarding hike approx one hour from Tromsø on the island of Kvaløya. The summit sits at 525m and offers 360° views overlooking the ocean and neighbouring islands during the entire hike making it an ideal hike to watch the midnight sun…and just between you and me, you don’t even have to go all the way to the summit to get great views! 😉

Despite its mere 283m Trehørningen on the island of Kvaløya offers 360° views from the summit overlooking Skulsfjord and Lyfjord.
You can also take in the views of the island of Vengsøya and also Kvaløya’s tallest mountain Store Blåmann.
We offer Trehørningen as one of our guided Summer/Midnight Sun Hikes as well as others at:

During November the temperature drops enough that the lake of Kattfjordvatnet on the island of Kvaløya completely freezes over.
During the daylight hours ice skaters dance and slide along nature’s skate rink, when day becomes night it makes for the perfect reflective stage for another kind of dance show!
There’s something incredibly special about standing in the middle of a frozen lake with the best show on earth dancing across the sky above!
Join us next time this show rolls back into town. 🤩
