ANNUAL DP TRIALS - TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS UPDATE - Due to the current global coronavirus threat, travel restrictions have been imposed in many countries. However, we have two reasons not to panic if you have DP Trials scheduled during the present global travel restrictions.

Firstly – You have a 6 month window for trials to be completed.

Secondly – In 2014 DP Marine introduced its award-nominated concept of Remote DP Trials, a unique method for completing trials without the need for one of our inspectors to visit your vessel.

For example, a recent incident whereby travel restrictions prevented one of our surveyors getting to the vessel in time did not stop the job going ahead. The onboard crew performed the full set of scheduled IMCA M190 compliant tests within a 24 hour period, recording the results which were uploaded to the secure DP Marine server and fully scrutinised and verified prior to issuing the report.

Were there any findings? Yes, just the same as there would have been with one of our inspectors on board. The crew reported they now understand their vessel much better than they did before, even though they have been the regular crew since the vessel was new – 6 years ago! This is proof that crew training & competence are key factors in the success of remote dynamic positioning trials.

Additionally, to satisfy client requirements and further improve our remote trials system, we have now expanded our unique database to accept video files, even more compelling evidence that remote DP trials are 100% fool-proof and really do work.

DYNAMIC POSITIONING TRIALS ARE IMPROVING WITH NEW IMCA GUIDELINES…

Recent development in the guidelines for Dynamic Positioning Annual Trials Programmes have been made by the International Marine Contractors Association’s (IMCA). These updated guidelines now see ‘incremental trials’ being applied to all types of offshore vessels as well as existing AHTS (Anchor Handling Tug Supply Vessel’s) & PSV’s (Platform Supply Vessel’s).

These improved guidelines provide a 5 year programme for your vessel’s Dynamic Positioning Trials, including: annual testing of critical equipment, incremental testing throughout the year, planned maintenance system and records references, and a rolling programme of tests conducted over a period of more than 12 months.

WORLD’S FIRST – LIVE TESTING OF THE DP SIGNAL SIMULATOR REDUCING THE COSTS OF DYNAMIC POSITIONING TRIALS

Dynamic Positioning Signal Simulator DPSS® – Unique innovative technology developed by Vessel Technology Ltd. to enhance operational safety, reduce risk and lower the cost of FMEA and annual DP trials.

DP & Marine Assurance Norway AS was selected by Vessel Technology Ltd as their preferred DP practitioner for the world’s first live testing of the innovative Dynamic Positioning Signal Simulator. David Milne, Managing Director of Vessel Technology Ltd said: “We selected to work with DP Marine due to their outward innovative approach in the dynamic positioning and marine markets. The testing was performed on Big Orange XVIII, a DP2 well stimulation vessel, part of the Siem Offshore technically advanced fleet. Testing was carried out in Esbjerg in conjunction with the FMEA Proving Trials.”

The results proved a total success with all parties seeing the potential to save money and time as well as increasing safety using Dynamic Positioning Signal Simulator technology.

David added: “The purpose of DPSS® testing is to identify problems and solutions before they arise. The DPSS® technology tests complex references, such as combinations of signals or faulty inputs, or simulates critical failures, such as network storms. Not only does this save time and money, it gives immediate feedback of the results, provides early identification of any potential DP issues and gives reassurance regarding the safety of the crew and equipment. This technology enables testing of areas highlighted by the MTS (Marine Technology Society) Dynamic Positioning Committee.

DYNAMICALLY POSITIONED FLOATING RIGS – THE SOLUTION TO SAVE COSTS

Over the last decade the increase in deepwater oil and gas exploration and development resulted in an increase in floating rig contraction and use. As the majority are operating in water depths of more than 90 metres (3000 feet), dynamically positioned (DP) rigs as well as facilities and vessels that support the drilling rig also use DP systems.

The deepwater dilemma as quoted by OilPro only 12 months ago states: “The vast majority of non-jackup units built in the last 10 years have dynamic positioning because operators have demanded the technology.
