In 1982, after access to Tibet was relaxed, six climbers embarked on an ambitious journey to the Shishapangma massif in the Himalayas. Facing a chaotic buildup and near-comical bureaucratic challenges, the team eventually secured access to the unclimbed southwest face of Shishapangma. It was here that Doug Scott, Alex MacIntyre, and Roger Baxter-Jones executed one of the boldest and most elegant ascents in Himalayan history.

Originally published in 1984 as The Shishapangma Expedition, this account won the inaugural Boardman Tasker Prize for Mountain Literature. Written as a series of diary-style entries from each climber, Shishapangma offers an unvarnished look into the complexities of Himalayan decision-making, climbing tactics, and interpersonal dynamics. The narrative is candid and tense, with each climber providing unique—and sometimes brutally honest—perspectives on the events and one another. At one point, disagreements even turned physical.

Despite the challenges, the team, at the height of their skills and experience, completed an extraordinarily daring climb. Their achievement set a benchmark, inspiring several new alpine-style routes on this stunning face in the years since.

Doug Scott reflects on the climb, writing:
"What is ‘success?’ The importance of what we do lies not in standing on the summit but in what happens along the way. The sky turned from mauve to deep purple—it promised a good day tomorrow, but today had been extraordinary. Snow, ice, and rock: 3,500 feet of it. A journey from the known into the unknown, physically, psychologically, and emotionally. We faced exhaustion and found a second wind, moved from security to uncertainty, with a commitment to push further. Fear, pride, anger, and joy—every emotion surfaced in the dark depths of that couloir."

Shishapangma is a raw and gripping portrayal of high-altitude alpinism and the challenges that define it.
