Krishna Janmashtami
It is believed that Krishna was born on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the month of Bhadra. On this day, Krishna temples all over Nepal are thronged by devotees. Devotees celebrate the occasion by singing devotional songs called bhajans and kirtans and fasting until midnight. Shops and houses are lined with motifs of Lord Krishna. In the Kathmandu Valley, devotees gather in and around Krishna Temple at Patan Durbar Square, Narayanhiti Krishna Mandir, and other Krishna temples.
The magnificent Krishna Temple with its 21 gilded spires, built in 1637, is an example of the opulence of the Malla era in the Kathmandu Valley. The Krishna Temple, built entirely of stone, is said to be the first specimen of Shikhara-style architecture in Nepal.
