Most people recognise the three major principalities in the Kathmandu Valley, Kantipur (Kathmandu), Lalitpur (Patan) and Badgaon (Bhaktapur). What is less well known is that there was once a fourth principality, Kirtipur. Located to the south of Kathmandu, the settlement of ancient Kirtipur is set at the top of a narrow hill. Until recently, the hill was surrounded by lush farming land but, as in much of the Kathmandu Valley, it is now, sadly, surrounded by urban sprawl. The old city on the hill, however, still retains many of old traditional buildings including the well-known temples of Bagh Bairab and Uma Maheshwor. Another site worth seeing on your visit to Kirtipur is the ancient Buddhist stupa of Cilancho which is found at the eastern end of the hill. While not as well known as the stupas of Bouddha and Swoyambhu it is definitely a place worth visiting.
