The Manaslu Circuit trekking, is a 12 to 13 day challenging trek around Mt. Manaslu at 8156 metres, the eighth tallest mountain in the World, in the Nepal Himalayas. Situated close to the border with Tibet, some 100 km northwest of Kathmandu, the valleys to the north and east of Manaslu were a restricted area until the early nineties. This area has always seen relatively few trekkers when compared to the more popular regions of the Annapurna and the Khumbu and the simple villages, together with the stunning scenery around Manaslu make this one of the classic, yet unspoilt trekking adventures in the Nepal Himalaya. Travelling via Gorkha and Arughat , a large prosperous bazaar in central Nepal, the trail leads through bamboo forests and deep gorges, penetrating into the heart of the Kutang Region. This region is inhabited primarily by Gurungs, who practice Buddhism. Continuing into the higher mountains of the Nupri Region, a fascinating area inhabited by descendents of Tibetan immigrants to the south of Manaslu, ascending the impressive gorge of the Burhi Gandaki for several days, passing through tiny villages perched on the steep valley sides, to reach the Tibetan world beyond the village of Ghap (2110 m). We had the feeling of entering a secret Buddhist world of monasteries, mani walls and prayer flags as the valley starts to open up, and there are remarkable panoramas of the peaks on the Nepal-Tibet border, as well as those of the Manaslu group, after you cross the village Shyo (2960 m), almost after 6 days of long march. The scenery becomes even more impressive as we climb up into the alpine environment on the approach to the Larkya La (5106m), on the ridge of the lowest depression between Cheo Himal (6820 m) on the right and Larkya Peak (6219 m) on the left, and with big peaks on all sides, is the highest vantage point in the Manaslu trek. This is a classic and tough ancient salt trading route that links the Burhi Gandanki with Marsyangdi valley literally Manaslu to Annapuran region. The principal peaks that we will see on this part of our trek are Ganesh Himal, Shringi Himal (7187 m), Himal Chuli (7893 m), Manaslu (8156 m), Cheo Himal (6820 m), Manaslu North (7157 m) and Himlung Himal (7126 m). Beyond the Larkya La, we drop down into the heavily forested valley of the Marsyangdi River, where trekking is beneath the giants of the Annapurna range, following the river down to a meeting with the roadhead. Once only accessible to fully self-sufficient camping groups, the Manaslu circuit can now be completed using local lodges and tea houses, giving a unique opportunity to interact with the local people who live in these high Himalayan valleys.
The Manaslu Circuit trekking exhibits the sensational mountain vistas, fascinating culture and biological diversity, spanning altitudes from 600 to 5200 metres – one of the Nepal’s last Himalayan jewels. This trek suits best, to those who are looking for the challenging but less trodden trekking in Nepal, is also a part of the Great Himalayan Trail, and is one of the best treks in Nepal for those looking for an alternative to the more popular Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit treks. The Manaslu region is a restricted area and despite it becoming more popular each year, it is no-where near as developed as the Khumbu or Annapurna regions. Manaslu circuit trekking region is a natural habitat for many elusive fauna including the snow leopard, grey wolf, musk deer, Himalayan Thar and blue sheep, Himalayan marmots and various species of birds. Keep your eyes open!! Trekking routes at lower Manaslu section is almost rebuild, which was being heavily effected by the April 2015 earthquake, which had a big impact in this area, now affected by landslides on and often.
