Required Documents for Tibet Permit:
Passport: A valid passport with at least 6 months of validity from the date of arrival in Tibet.
Chinese Visa: A valid Chinese visa, typically obtained for entry to China (can be arranged in Kathmandu or prior to arrival).
Tour Itinerary: A pre-booked and confirmed itinerary with a licensed Tibetan tour operator.
Permit Application Form: A completed permit application form that the tour agency will submit on your behalf.
Types of Tibet Permits:
Tibet Travel Permit (TTP)
Required for entry into Lhasa and other parts of Tibet.
Issued through an authorized tour operator in Nepal and is needed to board your flight or overland journey to Tibet.
Alien's Travel Permit (ATP)
Required for travel to restricted areas in Tibet (e.g., Mount Everest Base Camp).
This permit is issued after arriving in Lhasa.
Military Permit
Needed for areas near military zones, such as certain parts of Tibet near the borders with India, Nepal, or China.
Steps to Obtain Tibet Permit from Kathmandu:
Choose a Licensed Tour Operator:
Select an experienced and licensed tour operator in Kathmandu that handles Tibet Travel Permits and tours. Ensure they are authorized by the Chinese Government.
Submit Your Documents:
Provide your passport, Chinese visa (if applicable), and completed permit application form.
Share your travel itinerary, including the dates and locations you will be visiting in Tibet.
Processing the Permit:
The tour operator will submit your documents to the Chinese Tibet Tourism Bureau for processing.
The permit typically takes about 5-7 working days to be issued.
Receive Your Tibet Permit:
Once approved, your Tibet Travel Permit will be ready for pick-up in Kathmandu or can be delivered to you by the agency.
You’ll need this permit to board your flight or cross the border from Nepal into Tibet.
Cost of Tibet Permit:
The cost of obtaining a Tibet Travel Permit varies, but typically it ranges from USD 50 to 100, depending on the number of permits required and the duration of your stay. Additional fees apply for permits to restricted areas like Everest Base Camp.

Group Travel: Tibet travel permits can only be issued if you are part of an organized group or have a guided tour.
